Rang the old bill again last night. The answer was pretty much along the lines of what coppercyclist said. "we'd really like to be able to charge him, but the required evidence wouldn't be there, even if we could identify him".

That's as far as it's going I'm afraid. I have a few nice bruises and a scab or two now, but I'm not in any discomfort or pain. No bike damage, so I guess I should thank my luck stars and just get on with life.

Thx for all the support.

Not go all CSI and use a combo of who orders BMW wing mirror and forensically matching the paint from both mirror and car? Or have I been watching too much crime drama...

I'm not on knowledgable ground here, as this is more for a FSI to answer, but I think you can only examine paint and say which make and model vehicle it's from, rather than sort of DNA it to a specific car...

What I do know is that this test is expensive, and unlikely to be authorised for much other than a fatal RTC/murder.

Helmet cams are ok, but better with a fixed rear cam, to catch face and action of driver and number plate as they come up to you from behind

I would go for the local BMW dealer tact and ask them to keep an eye out for anyone ordering the mirror which will also require painting as they are respnsible for a hit and run on a cyclist/member of the public.
Total scum bag and deserves bringing down.I managed to get the scum that hit me arrested just by checking the road he had come out of,hey presto ! black Audi A.6,you have been nicked !

You never know, the mirror may have had a traceable serial number?

Actually no I'm talking rubbish, imagine if BMW kept details of all the serial numbers of parts when making a car, it would be a massive list......

Isn't there some kind of age test of paint?

I wasn't suggest the police should sit their playing poker and polishing their golf clubs, but as a practical matter what if their efforts turn up nothing? You got no evidence, you got no case. At this time the example you cite still has no case.

Even if they want to go all the way if the CPS don't think there's a realistic chance of a conviction they'll just fob the Police off.

Shame really as it sort of tells people that it's okay to go around knocking people off and if you do it hard enough and leave quick enough, they won't see your plate.

As it stands, I know it's a shame that they won't do anything (I had the same when a pair of knobbers in a Corsa squeezed me against a row of parked cars repeatedly, then stopped so I'd pass then shot past me at 50mph in a 30mph residential zone, but didn't catch the reg so they couldn't do anything).

I would seriously suggest you get a cam though - I know it's a 1 in a million chance of it happening, but the day you don't have it is the day that you need one. You can get decent HD cams for under 100 quid or so.

These get quite good reviews on here, from what I've seen. Don't have one (I have an original Contour ROAM) but they look decent enough on the footage to pick up reg plates.

You certainly won't turn up any evidence if you don't look for it.

At this time the example you cite still has no case.

Which makes it all the more reassuring to the general public here in Strathclyde that we have a police service prepared to make efforts to find criminals even when not handed to them on a plate.

Sometimes you have to do a bit of legwork.
