My neighbour is going to Canada and wanted to cruise to Alaska on a ship but because they visited Cuba the other year they have been refused a visa by USA.

You can get a visa, but have to go to embassy for an interview. Can't use ESTA

Yes they rang to make an appointment but the earliest is only two weeks before departure UK. If it was turned down their holiday would be cancelled costing them £££££££s. They are going to visit Toronto instead of Alaska.

We did that as part of our Honeymoon

Didin;t think much of the cruise ship - it was OK but...

main problem was getting onto the damn thing in Vancouver
We were warned to get there early and take a book and they were not kidding

From the time we arrived in the massive shed full of chairs
to the point where we got onto the ship

FIVE HOURS!!!

and, according to the people in Cacada that we spoke to when we got back, that was quite good
there were only 3 ships in when we were there - if all 5 cruise ship docks are in use then people can be waiting literally all day

and all that to get through US customs and security

every other country seems to be able to manage it perfectly well - but the USA has to be special - apparently

I hobbled round Madera on crutches six weeks ago and currently still on crutches in a hotel in North Wales. Camping season starts in 3 weeks (on crutches).

The ferries up the Inside Passage of Alaska are pretty cheap, and cover the same ground. Not a cruise but you can book cabins and stop off where you want along the way.

Last year two week holiday was finished off with a cruise, Alaska,i was not impressed,will not do another.This year ten days Portugal,a much better holiday.

The lil breaks and holiday booked thus far

March - night in a spa hotel for my birthday
March - 2 Nights in Wakefield at a friends - collecting a bike I bought and he lifted for me
April - 2 nights in Newcastle at a music event
April - 2 nights in Donegal airbnb for wifes birthday
May - 2 nights in Leitrim camping at a cycling festival
June - week in Portugal with the wifes family
July - two weeks in family holiday home on the north coast of NI
Aug - going to book up to a week somewhere but not sure yet! Maybe a road trip to Scotland or Wales.
