Not quite sure I follow you, Gwylan. (Although that might be the coffee stout and rum & cokes affecting my brain!)

Did you spend 30 years in Japan?

Are you advising against upgrading the flights?

No. I spent a lot of my career travelling. Sometimes I got to do some work.

Then retired, promised myself I did not need to travel. Especially anywhere that requires a flight.
But my wife would love to travel.
We compromise with wandering with the camper.
Do my level best to avoid flying!

Summer next year will see both of our kids finishing exams - daughter a level 3 advanced diploma and son his GCSEs. We’re planning a big holiday by way of celebration and reward. At first we were looking at a long-planned fly-drive around western Canada but the kids have decided they don’t want to “sit in a car all day looking at mountains”. We’ll park that idea for when the nest is empty.

To hit the more interesting brief of hot, beaches AND some interesting scenery we have identified Hawaii. Perhaps a 2-3 location holiday on different islands. Probably self-booked using AirBNB etc, as getting hotel rooms to cover 4 adults is tricky (nobody likes the idea of a pull-out bed or sofa bed in the same room).

Need to sit down and do some research. Flights, accommodation, hire car(s), ESTA etc. I’ve concluded that Hawaii is far enough from the contiguous states (both geographically and culturally) to be worth the visit to “USA”.

Do you take your own bike or leave one there?

I've always hired, but plenty of my friends will always bring their bike. I've witnessed bent derailleurs, stuff nicked from the boxes, damaged boxes, transfer costs, extra luggage fees, bike assembly.......hiring is so much easier and you get to try out new bikes.

We have just booked a train holiday for next August. My partner wants to travel and see cities, so we've got 12 days (with a night in each) as follows:

Plymouth - London
London - Amsterdam
Amsterdam - Berlin
Berlin - Prague
Prague - Vienna
Vienna - Munich
Munich - Paris
Paris - London
London - Plymouth (home stretch)

All 1st class travel which looking at the pictures is not as nice as I was hoping, but it saves a lot of faff at airports and trai stations are already in the towns/cities. The only thing is, we don't have a day in Munich, and the Munich - Paris journey is nearly 8 hours. But there will hopefully be more leg room than on a flight, and you can walk up and down easier. Or sleep with headphones

When you go west from Munich, wave as you go through Esslingen...

Id be too scared of damaging the hire bike, Ive dropped mine on the floor more than once, at least if it breaks then its mine to break

Surely you'd have insurance?

does it cover accidental damage ? I mean yes you would have the insurance obviously, but IME the insurance doesnt always cover what you think it should, and some hire companies, not all obviously, have a knack of exploiting the unwary. I guess I have low trust issues, especially in unfamiliar surroundings.

Read the small print. Hire before you go so you can do your due diligence in your own surroundings. I'd be surprised if you can't cover accidental damage (in the same way as car hire).
I've only had tatty ratty bikes for pootling abroad so not been fussed
