Always over insure if you can afford premium. You hope you never need to claim

Consider the construction of your house as some types of construction are not covered by "standard" policies. eg My house is in effect timber framed with timber weatherboard and over half companies just won't cover it (won't even quote).

We’ve used John Lewis for a good few years, mainly because their buildings cover is unlimited. Our house is a B-listed building and working out the rebuild cost wood require a surveyor and a lot of hassle.

We’ve had two claims, both handled promptly and without hassle. The second claim was for an escape of water (leak behind a shower) and the claims handler wanted to send a professional drying firm to put heaters in the bathroom to dry everything out. SWMBO and I felt that to be unnecessary, so claims handler said that they’d pay us the money saved! They also reminded me that the damp-proofing work in the adjacent hall would require redecoration so they’d pay for that as well.

They aren’t the cheapest, but we’ve been very happy. And they automatically lowered our premium when the first claim became more than 5 years old and so no longer affected the policy.
