They're both poor-quality lenses. Body-only and a 50/1.8 would be my starting-point. The 18-70DX is also surprisingly good and can be picked for about £150.

I second the 18-70 (which I have recently bought, surprisingly enough, for £150) - it doesn't have image stabilisation, which is a shame, and the zoom ring is a little stiff, but it's very sharp when stopped down and does colours very well. A good lens for the money.

VR is over-hyped anyway: it's only of any use if your subject is static. If that's the case, then you generally have the option of using a tripod. I guess twitchers find it useful, though.

having used the lens with VR turned off and with it turned on, the photos of motorsport taken, hand held, with VR on were sharper than without.

the Kit 18-105mm lens is actually the best lens I've ever owned, better than the canon lenses for my AE1 and the carl zeis and pentax for my practica
