2 rather key words in BOLD there - the vast majority of riders do ok with their allocated hosses, at most Olympics.
It's the one bad apple that catches the eye and - in this case - creates a kerfuffle.
(Of course if you're a more decent rider than her, please do let us know.)

I assume that someone who has made it to the Olympics and is in gold medal position is decent at what they do. However like many multi-element sports they may not be world class in each individual discipline. I may well be a more decent rider than her - I’m certainly more compassionate and I have never had a horse completely give up on me.

Is there not an organised cross country event held most years between horses and runners? Can't remember where.

Slightly OT, but there used to be an annual race organised in Wales between runners and a train.

I ran it once, and the train won (but not by much).

You can race the tube on some stops. But looking at the video it seems a dangerous pursuit. (Start video at 2mins, the first half is boring)
