What would you want as compnesation (and nothing other than a sorry is an option) if a hotel did the following to you;

1. You book pay for hotel and pay in full cost £1600 (it was a long stay for a few people not a flash hotel)
2. A week later they take £300 off your card you ring complain they repay it
3. Another week later they take a further £400 (which is returned but a week later)

What do you think the hotel should do to make this upto me?

Pay for any bank charges they've caused you, perhaps a free meal for the inconvinience / reduction of the bill.

it's an error thats been made somewhere so putting things straight and something as sorry for the cockup should suffice.

Contact you bank or card company and explain what is going on. They will keep an eye on things and may even have a quiet word with them about fraud.

I agree with the above.

If the hotel is genuinely sorry for the mistake, then it should refund you not only the money but any charges you have incurred as a result of said error and once you get there, at least one evening meal for the party should be on the house if that something you'd be paying extra for.

Tbh, you shouldn't look for compensation, Mistakes happen and it didn't really cause any inconvenience.

The prevailing compensation culture has got a lot to answer for if you think that compensation is an option to your mild inconvenience.

A straightforwards apology would placate me.

I'd be happy with an apology and an offer of a free upgrade if I were to return

Stuff happens sometimes. I was staying in a hotel in Washington a couple of weeks ago and they lost one of my shirts that I'd sent to be laundered. They were apologetic and paid for a replacement, plus a taxi to a shopping mall & back to get it. I didn't feel I needed any 'compensation', they made a mistake, they apologised and put it right.

I'd go with this. Sounds a little like money laundering to me.

Compensation isn't important but the hotel management should offer a token something for the inconvenience, free bottle of wine over dinner or similar, unless the management are in on the fraud.

Maybe best not to say anything to the hotel, given they have your card details, and just tell the bank and then change the cards.

Every company makes mistakes. However, I think that the mark of a good company is how it deals with them. Some things are worth just giving a prompt apology and amending the situation - no towels in the bathroom, kettle doesn't work etc.

I would have said taking £700 out of your account without your permission goes beyond that.
It really depends how inconvenienced you were by it, I guess. An extra £300 or £400 out of my bank account would have been an overdraft for me, and I would have been charged for every day my account stayed that way, so I would expect that to be refunded by them at the very least. It also depends how much of the chasing you had to do - if it was something they spotted and acted on, then an apology is pretty good - if you had to call them up and badger them for the money back then something more for your time would be a good gesture.

I would simply ask them. Tell them you're not happy to have been overcharged (do this in the foyer when you check in, but don't be angry or too loud) and would like to know what they will do as a good will gesture for your time and unnecessary effort.

I'd go along with is. An apology is enough if it's an honest mistake but it would be nice for the hotel to voluntarily provide some kind of gift. I wouldn't expect/chase the gift though, it would just be a nice touch.

Intresting views as always.

I'm not after a penny from them, I am however after an explanation and a sorry. If it had stopped at once I would have not even raised it, but doing it twice really shocked me.

It was on my credit card so hasn't cost me a single penny.

What most annoyed me was the attitude of the manager when I raised it, very dimissive.

You won't get one. If you do it won't be the truth for the simple fact it would definitely leave them open to being sued not that you can't do so now.

I would report the transactions to your card issuer as fraudulent as they were made without your permission. Get your cards changed as then they won't be able to deduct more money in future when they are feeling a bit short. Write a stern letter to them advising that you consider them a poorly run hotel, the customer service equally shoddy and should you wish to stay in their area again you would consider a fresh cowpat a better alternative then stay with them.
