Hi there

Has anyone had any experience of taking their bike into a hotel. I’m doing a Newcastle to Edinburgh cycle next weekend and the hotel in Newcastle has said that I can’t take my bike into my room because of Health and Safety. They have said that I can leave it at reception but I don’t really want to do that either and I’m not keen on leaving it locked up outside overnight either. I’ve previously stayed in Premier Inn and Travelodge with no problems but this is not a Premier Inn or a Travelodge!

I might just sneak it into my room!

Oops just read the end of your post!

What bollocks! How can a bike in your room affect elfin safety? I've had bikes in loads of hotel rooms and never had a word of objection; what you heard was one ill-informed employee who has no understanding of the value of a decent bike. Just take it into the lift, nobody will be bothered. If they are, ask them if they are prepared to take responsibility for a bike of X value and watch them go pale. Or change your hotel.

I don't think it is unreasonable not to be permitted to take a bike into a hotel room, but most hotels can find a secure covered storage space somewhere for a bike IME.
If they cannot, then tell them you will go elsewhere.

Would you be happier leaving it in a locked store in the hotel somewhere rather than the reception? As long as it's inside and out of sight surely it's all good.

I've taken a bike into a hotel a couple of times. Once they were leery about me taking it into the room, but instead locked it securely in the managers office instead. Best to see what they can do to accommodate you.

Ask them to tell you of the risk they have identified with taking it into the room and what assessment they have made.

I'd either go elsewhere or just check in and carry it into your room as you would any other luggage.

Even though I have taken bikes into hotel rooms. I do understand why some hotel's don't like it (health and safety bollocks withstanding). It's easy to make a mess of the room carpet, furniture, bedding etc from whatever muck and gunk is on the bike.

So as others have said, either ask if they have a locked room (like a conference room or cupboard) it can be stored in or change to a hotel that does allow bikes in rooms.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I'm not convinced the health and safety thing is necessarily bollocks. I've certainly stayed in hotel rooms where the only place to leave a bike would block access to the room door, and so block you in in an emergency. It might "only" be your own health and safety, and you might be willing to take responsibility for it, but the hotel cannot simply wash their hands of it.

Never been refused to take my bike in a hotel room, although never done it often. Health and Safety reason? What a lot if rubbish. It seems to be the standard answer nowadays when you get a negative response.
