Norwich City Hall. Finished in around 1938 and rather lovely. Inside it has high, pale pink ceilings, nice stairs and period lifts. The front foyer is stunning.the back stairs, the ones all us minions get to use, are not so stunning. The council chambers are wonderfu. I did my first day’s training in there, as all the other bookable offices were in use. It was roasting, but the natural light was fabulous.
Its boiling in the summers and a smidge chilly in the winter. secondary double glazing and a cartload of fans doesn’t much help.

Is that part of the world nice @Saluki. I am considering some holiday cycling time and have never explored Norfolk at all.

Come on over. We have 4 or 5 hills if you need them, otherwise it’s gently rolling. Not as flat as the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire fens, enough to catch folk out who are expecting pan-flats. Plenty of quiet roads, good pubs, lovely cake, beaches, leafy lanes and a sensible accent.
Norwich is ancient, with its Norman cathedral and castle, semi decent cycling infrastructure too, much to the annoyance of motor.
I would come for a ride, if you promise not to be fast.

It's the history of the area that is of interest primarily but also a lot of flat. Very much a potterer around 10 to 15 mph but get sidetracked an awful lot to take photos. If you don't mind ambling with distraction you'd be welcome @Saluki. I will look at dates and have the luxury of cheap guest rooms as there are a few places in Norwich that are the same company I work for and bike storage. I may elect to camp though as I have a new tent to test out. Decisions Decisions!

Presta, hope you don't mind the linky, but it's an interesting read:

The Great Baddow site mentioned on the Wiki page is home to one of the last surviving Chain Home radar masts from the war:

We used to use their anechoic chamber, as we didn't have one of our own.

Marconi had really untidy habits when it came to real estate, they bought up bits and pieces here, there and everywhere, there must have been a score and more scattered in and around Chelmsford. I worked at four different sites, but the only one still left standing is the crummiest, built in the bottom of the Beehive Lane gravel pit.

Not art deco, but worth a visit if you are in Norwich.

The story I was told that the marble was being shipped and the boat sank. NU paid the claim and then the cargo was salvidged. Instead of selling it on to the original destination or to another buyer, they decided to keep it to use in the foyer of the main entrance.

A rely stunning display of marble.

I'm not sure where Art Deco becomes Post Modernism but here are a couple of buildings by John Outram. The first is his Isle of Dogs Pumping Station and the second a building at Rice University ,Texas. It's probably best not to visit the latter when suffering from a migraine or a cracking hangover.

Now we were told it was due to go to Westminster Cathedral (or somewhere like that) but it wasn’t perfectly colour matched and something about delivery issues (no change there then) so Norwich Union bought it instead. This was the tale told on day 1 of working for NU in the early 80s.
