If you go into graphics settings with the monitor connected (right cllick the wallpaper and select properties) does it offer the opportunity to enable a second monitor ?
It might be possible to install the vista drivers from the sony site as a lack of such drivers in the downgrade to xp options does suggest that it may include the xp drivers.

Nope. Doesn't have that option. Default monitor only. I've discovered the telly does have a VGA socket, so I might try plugging into that, just on the off-chance.

I think I've hit 'game over'...now the thing boots up, but there's nothing on-screen but monochrome wavy lines. External display won't work, tv won't work, ubuntu no longer starts up, I'm shafted.
