How do bank card readers work?

I accidentally put a Nationwide bank card into a NatWest card reader. Not only did it recognise the card and PIN but it generated an access code that let me into my Nationwide account.

I don't know, not managed to figure it out. Got a Barclays PINSentry reader at work and at home, and I have no idea how it works.

One of these. They generate an access code which lets you into your internet account.

We have your surname now Mr Smith. Can you please supply the first half of the PAN Number & the last three digits of the Security Code, as given on the signing strip on the rear of the card.

As for how they work - no idea.
