As the title states how do they work.

Do you remain attached to the pedals if you are in a crash or is there some sort of fail safe.

Just always wondered as since i have clipless now. Just would like to have some idea to expect where my feet will be in such a case.

99% of the time your feet unclip. You'll almost always get lateral rotation of the foot and thus the foot unclips. Adjust your pedal to the slackest/easiest setting if you are worried.

Came off the cross bike today slippy roundabout, yep can confirm you unclip!

Yup, when I stacked an MTB a few years ago the bike and I simply parted company as far as pedals were concerned, sadly we then came back together with my foot across the top tube just as the bars spun round and promptly broke my ankle for me!

+1 one for gaz's slow speed comments too. I once hit a discarded kids scooter in the pitch black at very low speed following a manoeuvre and suddenly ended up on the deck with a broken elbow, but still clipped to the feckin' bike!

Came off the bike into a deep trough (about 4 foot deep) by the side of the road...the bike went beneath me and I went over the top superman style...haven't a clue how I became unclipped but I did ...and thank God as the bike came out undamaged!!!

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Erm .. only one of mine did when I crashed in November. I fell sideways downhill at speed on ice; the left pedal (in the air) unclipped, the one on the tarmac didn't unfortunately.
