They make enough money selling bottles of pop and crisps at over inflated prices to people on railway stations so they don't need to make any in their other shops.
I only go in because the post office is upstairs -which is quite annoying actually. I did look for a book the other day but left without one and went to the works and bought two for £2.

Next time buy Rouleur magazine - £10 well spent.

Then put it in an envelope, affix required postage and send it to me.

In Brecon they are pretty much the only place to buy books, have a huge range of magazines and seem to have cornered the market in stationary for the school kids. It's a good shop that employs local people and the town would be worse off without it. I can imagine this isn't the case in larger towns where there's a greater range of shops to choose from.

The only time I venture into WH Smiths is when I'm on my way to catching a train at Leeds or Darlington stations and want to purchase some esotheric reading material that strikes fear into the heart of my wife as she thinks that I'm about to embark on a boys' toys buying spree.

Tractor and Machinery, Stationary Engine News, Classic Van and Pick Up

I think, however, that I am succumbing to the allure of some of the goodies.

I'm actively chasing a Wolseley WD stationary engine, eying up an Austin A30 van and trying to get a go on my son's boss' Massey Ferguson.

It feels as if I'm never out of the place. I've bought an A6 spiral bound notebook there every year for the past thirteen to use as a cycle tour diary. I'd be devastated if WHS disappeared off the High Street, these notebooks fit perfectly into a doocot in my bureau.
So there we have it, How do W.H Smith stay in business? the definitive answer.
