For commuting, I don't ride my steel bikes in the wet or when salty. I prefer my aluminium framed rigid MTB with an 8 speed drivetrain. Durable and cheap to replace components.
I don't do leisure rides if it's raining, so the steel bikes only come out if dry. Winter salt is not bad if it's dry - you know...them sub-zero temps when it's bitterly cold but when the air is free of moisture.
