Surely the knife is the same under rotations around its axis?

It really depends upon who I happen to be thinking about at the time. I have been known to develop a strong stabbing action when I think of politicians..

Nope - pretty much same hold whatever the knife.
Craft knives I hold like a pen.
Marking knives I hold in a grip but with my index finger on the back of the blade.
Table knives I hold with all my fingers and thumb wrapped around the handle.
Fruit knives I hold with just my fingers wrapped around the handle but with the edge towards me for pealing, my thumb then rests on the fruit.
The knives off my surface planer I hold from the back edge only and very carefully indeed.

In case anyone says anything I am usually also found eating when I am using non food knives.

how can yo upossibly cut things with it if you hold it like a pen. I'ts not an ornament it does actually have a purpose, hence the blade.
