Three word soundbite
15 minute train journey?
Why not cycle the whole way?

I'd love to - the problem is it's between Ely and Cambridge, so my choices are the A10 (no thanks) or a mixture of minor roads and off-road paths along the river. It's 20+ miles each way depending on the route. I know I'm not fit enough to do that every day, and I haven't got a good enough bike to cope with either route anyway (I have a Brompton and an old mountain bike).

I keep promising myself that I will cycle home a couple of evenings a week in the spring/summer months on my MTB but I've never tried it yet. Or I could get off the train at Waterbeach in the mornings and add some extra miles...

Maybe I should make a New Year's resolution to cycle more, and work up to it in small steps. You never know.

About 13 miles each way, unless it is a particularly nice day in the summer in which case a longer route may be used

I have a similiar dilemma, the train journey I take @ 40 mins could be replaced by a ride as its only 12 miles, on paper. In reality its a very undulating route on some not great/busy roads, if I was a lot fitter maybe but as it is I'll stick to the short commute and leisure rides.

Depends how far I get the train, I have various options....always 1.5m from mine to station, the either 7 miles to work or if I get the train all the way 1/2 mile. On the way back, again 1/2 mile if I need to get home quick or 7 miles to other station or more often than not 13 miles to next station  Bit complicated but all depends on weather and how I feel. I am not one to go out in ice and snow having done it once and ended up walking most the way (very rural area).

I have a nice choice of routes to work. Most are country roads but there is a congested town road route which I use when I need a gritted route.

4-mile route partly down a muddy single track lane with passing places,
5 mile route along well-lit & busy roads,
6 mile (favourite) along country lanes,
8 mile ditto or even a 10 miler when I am feeling that I have lots of time !

My shortest route is 16 miles one way, but I have other lenghts  Longest is 27 miles one way, but if I need to add miles it's easy enough to stick on a loop down to Box Hill for a further 20 miles. I think the most I have done (commuting) is 90 miles in total.

Rolling down the hills with the bike.
I go to the station and back. Though, because i am finishing univeristy i am tempted to cycle at around 10-13 miles 4 days a week. Tempted though not sure because as soon as im on the road either bad drivers shout at me or worst have tried to run me over. Ah well i must invest in a camera!! lol

Blimey, people shout at you and try to run you over the moment you go on the road??? I get the odd idiot shouting at me but not often, I don't think anyone has TRIED to run me over, a few have almost accidently run me over but to my knowledge no one has actually tried to!

A touch over 17 miles on the way in, and around 21 on the way back. The extra 4 miles come from avoiding a climb past the local television mast. It takes an hour to an hour and a half, depending exactly how far into a cold I am and whether the laptop is coming along for the ride
