Commute usually max once or twice a week, depending on how busy I am... 17 miles each way, mildly undulating/flat, country lanes/last 2 miles in traffic. Takes usually hour and quarter, I don't rush it, and I have a pannier on the bike.

7.5 miles each way, and through London so a lot of stopping and starting.

15.5 each way. half in the quiet Essex/London suburbs and half on the A13 CP. Takes about 1:10, 20 minutes longer than train, but I never feel like hitting car drivers the same way I do with fellow C2C/DLR commuters

13 mile commute into london, 1hr 5 in 1hr 20 on way back due to small set of inclines. Ridden on decathlon MTB/hybrid thing that is now squeaking and in need of a service.

today took 1hr 30 in due to slow puncture, slow enough to warrant just topping up at start, but quick enough to think I should of just change it when i was about 3 miles away from work.

Am I the only one who thinks a 24 mile commute on 'just a cheap one' is a helluvan ambitious target for a newbie? No offense, but 50 miles a day is caning it, even with a good bike and some serious miles under your belt.

If it hasn't arrived yet, I'd think seriously about revising your choice of steed. If you're going to do that kind of mileage (and you can, there's nothing inherently undoable about it), and especially if you plan on actually enjoying it, having a good bike will make an enormous difference.

I'd recommend either upping your budget (taking into account all the money you'll be saving by not driving) or looking for a good second hand bike.

Oh, and, personally, about seven and a half miles, 25 mins.

25 - 30 mintes for my 7 miles, depends on route, mood, traffic and whether I need a Poo which can knock minutes off

11 miles 45 - 50 minutes (each way), undulating one awful hill, no significant traffic. Not hugely fit/ 52 years old. (New Thorn Audax bought for the purpose through cycle to work scheme./ No poo problems.)

10 miles each way; takes between 29 - 35 mins on a reasonably good day (weather and traffic-wise).

Probably going to change for the next 4 months as there's a diversion en-route due to gas mains replacement on Ferry Road. I may start making further diversions off the diversion just for some variety - as there are a few different ways to get to work around that point.

What? Purely due to the weight differential?

I forgot about that until this mornings commute. How much of Ferry Road is up and is only one way eastbound?

It's closed off westbound between Inverleith Row and East Fettes Avenue; you're diverted along Inverleith Row, Inverleith Place and East Fettes Avenue back onto Ferry Road.

At the end of Inverleith Place I've started going left down E Fettes Av, right onto Carrington Road and then up Craigleith Hill Avenue before rejoining my usual route half-way down Groathill Avenue.

When I'm feeling less tired I'll do that route then go the South Groathill Avenue, Queensferry Road, Craigleith Crescent, Ravelston Dykes, Murrayfield Road route before picking up the remainder of my usual route on Riversdale Crescent.
