How hot is a mains plug supposed to get?

Not really, check for poor connection (all wires are tight etc).

Heat implies either the device is drawing more current than expected (check you have the correct fuse installed) or the gauge of the wire is insufficient or a damaged conductor somewhere in the plug, or the prongs of the plug are making a poor connection inside the socket (listen for arcing, fizzing or buzzing sounds near the plug, or look for black marks around the socket).

the fuse blew ten minutes after posting... put another in (5amp as opposed to the 13amp that blew), that lasted half an hour and blew. I guess the heater is fooked :sad:

Change the plug for a new one with a 13amp fuse.

I think its volts times amps equals watts

If its a new ish heater I'm presuming a sealed plug? So no maintenance or checking possible

Dodgy fuse, which blew, new fuse should sort it.
