I'm coming up for ten years this October! Time for a change maybe? Whilst I love my job, and the lifestyle I can't help thinking that ten years is way too long! What would be your limit - even if you enjoyed your job?

Less than 2 years in my current job.
Not enough time to learn it all, so there's still loads of challenging stuff to keep me interested.
Your point re 'time for a change maybe' i think can be true. I spent 23 years at one company and although the role grew over the years and i thoroughly enjoyed it for the most part..but i felt i was getting jaded towards the end of it all. That job came to an abrupt end and i found myself in a new challenging job...completely new. I sweated trying to absorb it all for the first year...but it was one of the best things i ever did, it gave me new vigour, new outlooks etc etc.
Ten years in that job, it inevitably came to an end and i now do the same job, different company, different equipment which brings new challenges learning all that equipment.

Even at 45, you can take a completely different career (if you're lucky enough to get the chance...which i was)...it makes your brain work, scares you, rewards you, challenges you.

Sometimes i think if i got to the point where i could do my job with no effort, it'd be time to move on, i need something different all the time.

I've been in the current job for three and a half years now. I'll be there until the end of this year at least, it'll be that long before I can move in with NT - if it wasn't for that I don't know how long I'd stay at it - I like it, but its a physical tiring job, and sooner or later I'd find it too much. I'm looking forward to perhaps working part time and spending more time on making stuff to sell. No idea what I'll end up doing over in Manchester - whatever comes up!

My first job, in a supermarket, was meant as a stop gap while I worked out what to do after bad A levels. I got stuck there for 12 years....

I have been a dog groomer since 1980 and love it.
Dog grooming gave me enough money to live on through university - twice. I have done other things (Network engineer, Worked for Norwich Union and so on and so forth) but I have always kept my hand in.
Now the hubby is ill and my hands are not what they were so using a keyboard, day in and day out is not an option grooming is a way of making enough money to pay the bills and have a nice bike without having to work for 40 hours a week.

Not so much jobs, as many have been short contracts, but my career paths have been around 10 years long each.

From around 16 years old:
First working as an electrician and in building services with light engineering.
Then working in social housing and councils - sheltered and supported, general management, development, and then area renewal.
Then as a cabinet maker and a teacher of furniture design and making.

Maybe it is time I followed a new path again leaving all else behind.

Left school and worked in various entertainment venues as a techie for 10yrs or so then ended up in a large supermarket again as a stop gap for 6 months. Have now been in stop gap for 10yrs, I have done numerous different jobs and I've also moved store, I have got itchy feet to move on but unfortunately safety and a regular wage has kept me where I am as I have seen numerous friends leave then come back cos bigger and better things didn't work out or have gone bust. I have plans to move to a new distribution centre which is getting built next yr which will be with same firm and also a 15 mile commute each way. I have also done the whole management thing and it's not for me so quite happy on the floor and getting hands dirty (working!!!.) @fnarr before you get a quip in!!

25 years at the company came around this week, but several roles during that time. I get a long service reward in the next couple of weeks which is to be invested in a new bike. I met my wife there and she has worked there for 33 years.
