I have just had to have the BB replaced, its a Hollotech II.

It wasn't making any noises at all but as I was pedalling I could see the chain ring moving 5 mm or so in realtion to the front de-railer.

A quick call to the LBS and they replaced it within the hour....

But how long should a Hollotech II last? I bought my bike as a Christmas prezzy to me, It has been HEAVILY used (Its done 5500 miles).

The Chain and the Cassette are known quantities and are easily cleaned, lubed and checked, but the Hollotech..thats sealed...Is 5K a good life??

Wondering if I have to replace the darn things every 6 months then I might as well buy a Hollotech tool...

Buy a tool anyway. Swapping out the BB is such a simple job anyway. Why pay the LBS?

I have the tools for the job not just to save money, but the satisfaction of doing it myself and in a timescale that is way quicker than the LBS. Plus I don't have to put the bike in the car and take it there.
Buy the tool.

They are pretty cheap, so not a big issue. Sorry on the old square tapers here, but a good sealed unit will last a long time.

Which 'model' BB cups were they - maybe go 1 up next time.
