A cold spell a few years back I was out in minus 8, maybe even less.

On the whole the roads were safe. It was both wind free and sunny, so staying warm was not a problem. On arriving home I chopped off the accumulated ice on my beard and moustache.

It was 8 degrees last weekend. I donned enough clothing to make me look like a bibendum. Did 50 miles. Regretted it.

It's not like things like my face getting cold. It was my body getting cold. So I could probably do colder if I had some better clothing. I'm on the lookout for a merino warm base layer now.

We regularly ride in sub zero temps, but only when its dry, starts off in freezing fog, like this morning, but inevitably ends up with blue skies. I think the coldest so far was -6°c. But I layer up then slowly peel them off as we climb. Also take a spare 'buff' and hat to swap over for the descents.

I find that it is hard to judge the right clothing for cycling in sub-zero temperatures. Unlike some other sports (such as running) your power output varies widely when cycling so the right clothes for cycling up a hill are the wrong clothes for freewheeling down it.

I'm not sure how to prep for commuting on a road bike when it gets much colder.

More layers I suppose.

If ice comes I guess I'll just fall over and be off the bike for a month or two.

As others have said it is the wind that will ruin a ride rather than the air temperature,,
I had the worst winter experience of all time the other day, it was zero but felt colder because of the wind
I soon warmed up though but then it started to rain, a cold drizzle. It is farm land where I live and due to
tractors coming off muddy fields some areas of the road were covered with mixture of mud and cow shoot
that soon became a slurry. I was almost home when this milk tanker coming the other way flew by spraying
me with this cold noxious mix, Everything in the wash, me in the bath bike cleaned up and, since I was
being so thorough I should get my head tested she said.

Ive cycled at -12, here in Denmark. I have had my scooter out at -15 and that wasn't a problem. As long as there is no breeze it is not a problem and if it is sunny you get warm quickly. As soon as the slightest breeze starts, it just eats through you.

I have had brake cables freeze up on me though.

Almost too cold for me today (or more probably I tried a ride which was too long). I do remember cycling into work one day and encountered freezing fog which kept creating little ice sheets on my glasses...made the ride really long.

Quite dry here today (only the odd shower) but it is very cold. 1.5C on the weather station thingy.

After all the rain we've had the roads are wet and possibly icy in places so I'm not chancing it.

Unlike the grandchildren who fall over, cut their knee, and 10 minutes later it is fully heeled; my injuries take weeks/months to sort themselves out and sometimes never!

Quite happy to wander around the mountains with an ice axe and crampons at well below zero though - so I'm not a total wuss!

Bang on zero when I went out this morning, which is the coldest yet.
Thermal bib tights, compression base layer, merino layer over that, merino arm warmers, neck buff and the new Altura thermal jersey that Mrs ND bought me for my birthday. Oh and two pairs of socks (one being seal skins thermal socks). And a pair of Altura gloves.
I was still blooming cold.
There was a bit too much ice about for my liking - no PBs set today. ;)
