I don't think this question has been asked for a while.

Thought it might be interesting to see what people do

If you can do the poll on your mean average commute ONE WAY, then write a bit about the min, max, variable route distances, amount of times you cycle to/from work per week.

Modal average is probably more instructive but probably too difficult to understand for some.

I average about 9.5 miles one way.

Probably averaging 3.5 times a week commute to work.

Longest I have done is about 15 miles - will look to some longer ones in the summer when the days are long.

Shortest possible distance I can do is about 7 miles but that takes me down the A56 through Stretford and is horrible.

9.1 miles each way, either going through the lanes or A530 and A51. I usually manage it about 3-4 days a week depending on what my shifts are.

When the evenings get lighter I hope to extend my route through some of the other lanes.

My ride is 17 each way, although some days I cheat and go down the guided bus way route, which makes it 15.5, but I only tend to do that on a Friday.

So every week, its 170 miles for me, which is great as I am doing sportives now and require no training runs !!

18 miles in, 15 miles back is my usual commute.
Direct it's 12 each way but I add the extra what ever the weather.
I only work a 4 day week so that 132 commuting miles a week

Mine is 10 one way and a smidgen over 9 coming home, or vice versa depending what shift I am on, I do the 10 mile route when travelling at dinnertime as it cuts out a couple of awkward RAB's

Probably average 3-4 times per week, and will do the odd extra half mile if I am early to work or an extra 2 miles on way home if the weather is OK and I feel good.

Haven't got a shorter route in, it;s pretty much straight there and back.

Voted the last option not to be "clever" but because it varies so that was the only real option to choose

At the moment, it's 3 miles one way. I'm trying to up it but I'm so busy at work I'm arriving early and leaving late and feeling run down - though it was 10 miles this morning.

As it warms up, as I did last autumn I may do 14 / 3 / 25 / 3 / 14 Mon through Fri

Modal over the year would be 3 but that wouldn't tell an accurate story either (which is why I didn't choose any of the other options)

Speed varies on route, my 10 miles is pretty flat and fast (computer not working right so no figures to hand), a choice of 2 or 3 options for 3 mile routes (to keep things fresh) vary on hills and speed. Anything over 10 miles involves hills, either a climb out into the peak district or a slog up one of the horrible "doesn't LOOK much of a hill" longer urban inclines. My usual 14 or 25 is picturesque and takes in either Redmires or Bamford/Ladybower - which is an incentive (need to fix up the MTB so that I can do a "road out - offroad in" morning ride to work over Long Causeway near Stanage Edge, over to Redmires, then a fast descent to work

A fraction over five miles each way. The longest was a fraction over ten miles. I got to work and discovered that I had left the office key at home. It was a great ride though. Edit: I have missed one two-wheel commute in 2011, so I guess I average a little over 5 round trips a week with the odd weekend one. I never want to go back to the motorised version. No fun at all.

BTW, the route is pancake flat and even at my pace, it is way faster than sitting in a car. I am full of admiration for the "serious" crew

I took up cycling seriously in October, but have been quite frustrated by the weather. We had pretty much a whole month of snow and ice here.

I've just bitten the bullet, sold my car, added mudguards to my MTB (old bike) and bought a pair of waterproof trousers. Cyclemeter tells me it is 1.92 miles to my work with about 350 feet of climb.

In a strange sort of way I had convinced myself that the short trip didn't really make it worthwhile. All the faffing about with getting ready, washing and changing into a shirt once I got there, seemed to be more bother than it was worth, given my spend on fuel was minimal.

The hill still seems pretty hard though. I leave the house and immediately start to climb. Within a couple of minutes my heart and lungs are going pretty hard at it and it feels very demanding.

27 miles each way for me which is why I don't do it very often - once or twice a week in the summer but probably only manage twice a month at this time of year.

I work 12 hour nights on a 4 day on/4 day off pattern and my wife works days so because of the kids I am kind of restricted on the number of times I can cycle to work as some nights she doesn't get home until it is too late for me to cycle, but weekend and school holidays are fair game.

My commute is around 10.5 miles each way from Ashton-under-Lyne to Hazel Grove and unfortunately I often only manage it once or twice in each 8 day shift pattern. This week is the school holidays and I am trying for 4 nights cycle commuting for the first time ever. 3 nights so far and if I manage tomorrow then it will be 84 miles this week.

Every one thinks I am mad cycling 10 miles home after a 12 hr shift but I love it and I arrive home with a clear head. Only doing half nights this week because I am up with the kids during the day so get to ride home at 12.30am which is different but not unpleasant.

The 10.5 mile trip takes 40 minutes +/- 2 mins but only 20-25 minutes in the car so I am under some pressure to keep that time saved as family time and take the car!

EDIT: speeeling

I took up cycling within the last 12 months and the change in my fitness has been dramatic, if a bit steady in the progression. Now I glide up hills I used to struggle up with my chest almost exploding, up on the pedals because my legs weren't strong enough to turn the cranks. Now I have been putting some miles in with training rides I'm starting to see a good improvement. Why don't you try extending your commute down some country roads just for fun, fitness and training?

8 miles each way in the Winter but 12 miles from Spring to Autumn as I take a more scenic route. I do this every day plus a 40 mile spin on one of the weekend days.
