After that, once the plants are established, the hens are much more interested in their pest control duties and woe betide any slug, snail, beetle, shrew, mouse, frog.. that the beaks of death locate & zoom in upon.

9th year of allotment gardening ...
Unfortunately, due to moving house, the allotment is now 7 km away from home, so can't just nip in on the way home from work to harvest
On the + side, this adds loads to my cycling mileage
Tomorrow the 1st rhubarb crumble of the season is on the menu
(I'm a bit further north than most of you)
planted/sown outdoors/permanent crops:
tatties (1st & 2nd earlies, early & late main crops)
shallots
rhubarb
strawberries
gooseberries (red & green)
currants (red & black)
globe artichokes
jerusalem artichokes
herbs
parsnips
radishes
sown indoors:
different pumpkin varieties,
summer squashes,
courgettes
marrows
pickling gherkins (haven't tried these before)
still to be sown/planted:
runner beans
climbing French beans
dwarf French beans (yellow & green)
beetroot
spinach
Swiss chard
rocket
peas
leeks
purple & white sprouting broccoli
spring cabbages
ice berg lettuce
cut & come again mixed lettuce

Good morning on the plot today, loads of flowers in (dahlias, calendula and loads. Of bulbs from a recent Guardian offer) plus:

Alongside the spuds, broadbeans, parsnips and shallots already in.
Beetroot, courgettes and a few other bits and bobs to go in. Loving it.

Carrots, lettuce and herbs are planted.
We are now thinking about setting up a raised vegetable bed on part of the back lawn. Hopefully we can get this sorted in the evenings this week.

I've planted potatoes and courgettes in growing bags and pots. Got a few onions, shallots and spring onions in.
I don't have much space in our rented garden 6' x 4'. Rest is slabbed. Going to get some beans in soon. Have some rhubarb and mint in one border and varous herbs in pots and odd spots around.
Tried carrots in large pot last year but lost them to root fly. Might try them again next year but not put feet under pot which I thought would be good for drainage but must have allowed root fly in.
Lost all sprouts and cabbages last year when away for summer no-one would squash caterpillars and slugs. Again might try them next year with a net over them.
I don't see point growing anything if you can't eat it but other half likes pretty flowers. I tell her beans have flowers and have been growing them for last 3 years.

We're having to create a garden from scratch since our entire 80' long garden is concreted and gravelled over three terraces. I've broken up the concrete on one and a half terraces so far and managed to expose some poor quality subsoil. But so far we've planted:
lettuce
courgettes
coriander
parsely
broccoli
cabbage
peppers
rocket
redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes
runner beans
soon we'll be planting:
peas
tomatoes.
All these (except the currants) are in seed trays in the greenhouse; by the time they're established I'm hoping to have got a couple of tonnes of topsoil in for the garden. This is all new to both me and Ms RT: it's hard work, but it's fun!

I'll play devil's advocate for the flowers ...Marigolds are good at attracting aphids and other beasties away from your vegetables, and if you have a plentiful supply of pollen throughout the season, any veggies that need bees before they set fruit will benefit.

I don't grow veg (I am good at killing plants - even the ones that are categorised as "robust"), but my Mum has turned almost all of her back garden into an allotment. She churns out the veg like a good 'un! Shame I haven't inherited her green fingers! I am capable of killing cacti, and they are almost unkillable!
