IF (and that is a very big IF) I decided to change my existing 20 gears (double 10) to a 30 gear (tripple 10).......getting LBS to do it.....
a) what is involved ?
b) what would be approx cost ?
Gears are full 105s

I've tried googling (without success) and dont want to actually go in the shop to ask:blush:

Depends if your 105 shifters is compatible with triples as well as doubles - the 5600 series is, but im not sure about the newer 5700 series. The chainsets are often available at a good discount online - eg Ultegra level triple for about £100 instead of £250, but the shifters are not (so another £100+ probably).

I've never changed from a standard to a triple but i can go from standard to compact and back and that is a pretty straight forward job - basically only involved removing the old crankset and adjusting the height of the front derailleur slightly. It was much cheaper doing this myself than getting a bike shop to do it - not so much the labour costs but because i could get the crankset at a discounted price online that the LBS couldnt match.

LBS will be charging RRP even if they fit it for free.
Assuming you are going for the latest (5703) iteration of the 105 groupset that's

new chainset £175
new shifters £220
new front mech £35
as an absolute minimum

possibly new BB cups needed £25

if your existing rear mech is an SS (short cage) model you'll need to change that to a medium cage (GS) £50
you might well need a new chain £30 - in which case new cassette as well £50

so - no change out of £500

if you shop around carefully and pick up sale items (or 5603 series parts) and fit it all yourself you should be able to do it for about £350 - 400

or as Peteaud suggests, change the rear derailleur to a RD-5701 and put an 11-32T (SRAM Apex) cassette on it. Need a new chain too. Total £100
Of course if your legs are really really crap like mine you need an 11-32 cassette and a triple !

Change the rear cassette and rear mech (you would have to change the rear mech anyway)

Its what i did.

Why? upgrading to a triple would involved replacing the front gears for what ever ratios he wants and a front mech thats compatible. How would this affect the rear mech and cassette?

The rear mech takes up the chain slack. If you fit a tripple at the front, the rear mech will need to be able to take up more chain slack with a tiny granny gear on the front so you will need a mid to long cage rear mech to keep the chain tension!

Buy the parts take them to your LBS to fit them. Research what you need, dont be afraid to ask your LBS its just one opinion, if you dont mind mix and match then you can get some real bargains Ultegra chainset for £100, Front mech £15 you could pick up the parts for less than £200 in total, assuming your levers are ok for triple plus the labour which isnt usually much.

Chain length.

OK it will depend on whats fitted, but i would guess a medium cage.

Depending on what cassette is fitted.

Most triples have a medium or long cage rear mech to allow for the difference on the front rings

EDITED : sorry rob didnt see your reply.

Thanks to all.
As I said........ "IF (and that is a very big IF) I decided to change"
I am reasonably happy with what I have and the area I live is quite flat so 2x10 is OK.
If it had been 10 bob I may well have done it but
