What I haven't taken into account is the fact I sold my car and now look to take public transport / cycle more on journeys.

I've surprised myself with how much additional money I seem to have in the bank.

Always negative, if it was all about saving money I could walk to work in about 30 to 40 minutes.

Bought my bike for £999 on the cycle to work scheme from work which works out at roughly £40-£45 a month for 1 year.
Previously I used to buy a bus pass which cost £82 a month so even including all the small expenses of buying things like inner tubes, waterproofs, gloves ect. still at least a 40-50% saving every month.
Also there is the saving of not having to buy new trousers after getting fatter as I've played no rugby this season so cycling has been my main way of staying in shape!

I commute 340 miles a month, so the saving in fuel is good. I have bought 3 bikes over the 6 years I have commuted getting more expensive each time (current Spesh 2 years ago). But I do like my Lycra!

Cycle commuting means financially I'm well ahead of the game. Rail commute is between £7 and £14 a day (depending on ticket option) or £40 a week, £153 a month, or £1600 for a year. Using a car, according to my spreadsheet model, almost exactly mirrors the cost of a monthly season ticket. Cycle commuting door-to-door is quicker than going by train, and costs me about 10 minutes over the car, except the car journey can vary from 35 minutes to an hour+ depending on what the wackoes in front of me had done traffic mayhem wise.

Cycling as a hobby however is a money gobbling black hole. But if that's the worst vice a man has.....

Fuel and parking over a month 279.80 or 3077.80 over 11 months,(but that was over 3 years ago)my commute is 210 miles per week.
vs
now, a new commute bike every year, selling the old one ( i generally don't service or replace components unless it fails) so well in the black
with the exception of branded cycle clothing which gets expensive... but i cant help it I'm a brand whore.

Bike £105 second hand of eBay
Repairs to bike at LBS £55
Tubes tyres and wheel £43
Welding on bike (bottle of sloe gin about £7.50)
Total so far £210.5
Fuel costs £650 (edit this was fuel cost when I was only cycling in twice a week)
Service on car £150 (only once this year instead of twice)
Tyres £43 x 2 (replace 2 a year on average)
Total cost £886
I think I’m up on transport cost
Up on the food bill. (Spending around £10 less a week on food, due to losing weight through cycling and eating less)
Down on the cost of clothing and washing them. (Three sets of kit from aldi and I've had to spend more on bribes so my wife will wash my stuff mid-week)

Do I get to budget a credit of £250 for breaking my vantage and getting a warranty upgrade to a horizon?

In general cycling probably costs me more, but it is also my main hobby

Been commuting daily since beginning July:

Bike Commuting costs:
Scrapped car +150
Existing bike --
Extra cycle clothes -150
New chain/cassette + service @ LBS: -70
Net cost = 70 quid over 3.5 months = 20/month

Car savings. (monthly)
Fuel: 90/m
Insurance: 17/m
VED: 18/m
MOT/Service/repair =50/month
net Cost= 165/month so over 3.5 months = 577

Saving just over 500 quid over three months...

CTWS will set back a bit more but over the year I still expect to be over £1400 better off.

It costs me £15 in petrol to drive to work and back so the saving on fuel is good on its own. Although I don't ride everyday. Rode in to work this morning in the dark and it was ace!

My commute is only 10 miles per day so I reckon that I am saving about £35 a month in fuel (halved my normal monthly fuel costs). Unfortunately I can't get rid of the car completely as my family & I rely on this for other journeys when we need to travel together as a family. I will be saving around £350-£400 per year next year as I would have needed to purchase a works parking permit had I have still been driving to work.

However, a new Giant Defy on the works cyclescheme, cycle clothes, Garmin GPS, pannier rack, bags, pumps, tyres, inner tubes etc etc and I think I'll start actually seeing savings by around August 2018!! Especially when I've already got my eye on an N+1 for next year.

Saying that, the bike has been a positive lifestyle change (lost 3.5 stone in weight) and has given me a healthy hobby (don't have to pay for an overpriced gym membership that I'd no doubt get bored of a couple of months down the line) so whatever the cost, I try not to worry about the 'savings' too much.

To get to work sans bike would mean taking tram, train and a bus.
1 Year Ticket - £2,000
1 Month Ticket - £200
1 Week Ticket - £50
My bicycle purchases from previous years are easily paid for.

This year I've spent around £500 - 600 on parts (around £400 of which was on bicycle lights). Still in the black
