New:-
saddle
Bar tape
Wheels
Tyres
Chain
Cassette
Cables
Bar ends and dust cap covers
So far
Still lovely to ride and went "off roading" today

The only original part of my fixed iron is the crankset.

I wouldn't buy a new car if it needed new brake pads

I've got a fixed iron too, but it's a bit of a faff having to move the ironing board.

They do say that you should buy the best frame you can afford when you buy a bike, then everything else can be replaced / upgraded as you go along.

Three of my bikes have been stripped down and rebuilt several times, sometimes just to change the configuration, other times to replace worn parts. The bike I used for commuting, is one of the three and only the frame and forks are original.

The question is could you get a better car for the price of the motor? Let's take a more realistic example.Car worth £1500 (my saab say). Motor packs in - hey it's already done 130000. Is it worth spending, what, £2500 on new engine. By my reconing yes, since without an engine my saab's worth nowt. But for £2500 i can "buy" a high class car with a new engine. Another £2500 saab won't have a new engine.

Using car analogy (a) because you did and (b) because I've already run through the scenario for a car.

A bike is even more just a collection of bits than a car, so assuming something half way decent I'd just replace the bits, including the frame itself

Been there done that, and in all but the worst situations I.e. Cracked block a rebuilt one is a good option

If its a nice bike and you enjoy riding it then keep it going.
