How Odd, It Works Now

But For How Long??

For quite a few months, the rear-wiper on my Octavia estate has been non-functional

Granted it's worked on a few really hot days last summer (not when you need it!)
My trusted (long-term) garage agrees with me, that it's the wiring, as the hot-weather working points towards a micro-fracture in a wire

However, as it's not a legally required (or MoT tested item) I've not bothered - to save stripping out the interior trim to check the loom
BUT
This afternoon, as I started it up after work (had to go in it, as I slept in), it swept...
I must have caught the control stalk putting the 'Disk-Lok' on?
Whether it will continue working, is another matter entirely!!

Had I just caught the stalk, at the 'right angle', or is it purely coincidental, that it worked?

I'd get rid of it given the unreliability of rear wipers on any VWAG. They also look way better without.

Mine is intermittent also so it's getting binned when it gives up the ghost.

My MOT tester told me a couple of years ago that if there was a rear wiper it had to work or it would be a fail. He had no axe to grind as he did not own the garage.
Similarly the upper marker lights on the motorhome had to work if present. If not present then no problem.

I've got reversing sensors that worked for a week and a bit two years ago. I didn't even know I had them till then.

And my heated rear screen has never worked in the three years I've had the car. I think it is probably the relay but the Haynes manual is a bit vague on where it is and I can't be arsed looking.

He shouldn't be an M.O.T. tester then because they're simply not a testable item. The car could have a dead body glued to the roof, or a ticking atom bomb on the back seat, and it wouldn't matter. If it's not a testable item it cannot be tested, and cannot be cause for failure or advisory.

If it has a ticking atom bomb on the rear seat he may have to mark it on the test report that he couldn't test the rear seatbelts because of said device, just like if a baby seat were fitted.

The MOT testers I know would probably nick it!

One tester in particular has told me some very interesting tales. In one car he found a load of cannabis in the ashtray, so he pinched it - his reasoning was that they're hardly likely to call the police. In another he found a load of very torrid lesbian love letters, so he photocopied them and distributed them as porn. He clearly didn't realise he was talking to a copper at the time of these disclosures!

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I say get shot or disconnect
our old car started with random electronic faults then the power steering stared cutting out which is not fun as it goes dangerously heavy to steer

I'd be out with electrical contact cleaner - it's marvelous stuff.

One of my radiator fans stopped spinning recently (noticed by the car fans being quiet with the a/c on). Popped the connector off, swapped with working fan, fan spun up. Liberal spray of contact cleaner on connections, bingo all working.

Similar effect on Xbox controller battery packs, air bag connectors, car tail light bulbs, battery light connections, cleaning out grubby bike bearings.. you name it. :okay:

I'd be looking at water ingress near the motor.

The risk with intermittent electrical contacts is that they start a fire.

Sitting in the queue on the way to work in my Carlton, smoke started pouring from behind the dash, but fortunately it stopped when I turned the ignition off. It turned out to be a poor connection on the HRW fuse. I stood watching a MkIII Cortina burning on the A1 once, that was an electrical fault. They'd stopped to get it fixed earlier in the day.
