My old Saracen cost me £60 from a mate and he wants to buy it back when i get my new one but he has no chance, even though its about 6 yrs old.
Im currently narrowing down my search for one and im spending about £3k so i can get an Ultegra set up, but i know it will be outdated in the near future.
So with that i was wondering how often you guys replace your bikes ?.

In my head, about every two or three minutes.

What is this " replace" of which you speak?

'Replace'?

You never replace. You augment.

I'm not an upgrader, so if I get a new bike it's because it's a sort I haven't had before, and I keep the old ones, because they are still useful for what they are useful for.

In the last three or four years, I've bought the recumbent trike, the Raleigh Jeep (just fell in love with it at an auction, and NT treated me) and the Brompton - all second hand though. And none of them 'replacing' my daily use bikes (one winter, one summer).

Im most likely going to keep the Saracen for the winter and my new one for weekends and nice weather rides, but just say in 2/3 years the saracen might be a right heap and the new one will have a few miles under its belt, so the new bike will be demoted to make way for a new one.

I have three bikes. The first i bought in 1999, the second in 2000 and the third i bought four weeks ago.

I bought a Bianchi with a Mercatone Uno paintjob when Marco Pantani was still considered a bit of a hero - 1998/1999-ish.

I bought a Rock Lobster MTB in 2001. Unfortunately, the UK foot and mouth disease outbreak caused all the bridleways to be closed before the bike was delivered so I didn't get to ride it for 6 months!

The Bianchi frame cracked in about 1993 so I bought a Cannondale CAAD5 frame and swapped the parts from the Bianchi to that.

Not long after that, I decided that I wanted to make the Cannondale my good weather bike so I bought another pair of wheels, a 10-speed Chorus groupset and a steel Basso frame. The new bits went on the Cannondale, and the old bits were transplanted again, this time to the Basso.

Since then, it has just been a case of maintaining the bikes as and when necessary. I won't be buying a new bike unless my financial situation suddenly improves so I can afford to buy one and a bigger house in which to keep the expanding bike collection!
