Not that often. I went through a phase when I bought three in quick succession- A Brompton, an Airnimal and a Spesh Allez (2004-2005), since then the only new one has been a Singlecross, there have however been four second-hands or eBay parts builds in that time.

Prior to that I had two new bikes in the period 1988-2004.

Erm ... in the last 18 months I've bought:

- Ridgeback Platinum new. Frame cracked & replaced with ..
- Spesh Secteur Comp new (voucher from above & cash)
- Raleigh Airlite 100 new - won, so not 'bought'
- Python Impact - technically new as it was unused
- 1985 Ammaco Tony Doyle - s/hand
- Carrera Virtuoso s/hand (now sold)
- Cycle to work bike - Spesh Globe Daily 2 Step thru

Erm ... and I'm looking at 2 others to buy next year. Do I have a problem?

I now have 5 bicycles....I did give one of my friends my old faithful Peugeot Chamonix Circa 1986 last year (simply didn't have space for it) - I couldn't have sold it to a stranger - and I still have visiting rights. ^_^

I got an Apollo MTB in May 2011 for commuting. Then I started getting the bug, so I bought a Carrera Virtuoso road bike 2nd hand. Then the Apollo got nicked, so I replaced it with a £50 Raleigh MTB off Ebay. Then my mate gave me his old Ridgeback MTB so I commuted on that for a while, and then in February this year I treated myself to a Revolution hybrid for the commute.

So, I've bought five in 18 months. I've still got three of them, and I'm buying a £1000 road bike in February. And I want a single-speed for the commute.

To be honest, if I didn't have a mortgage and a young family, I'd probably buy a new bike every month!

12 years between new purchases seems to be popular on here. By rights my next buy will be when i'm 63, so i'll be looking at either and electric bike or one of those with a wicker basket on the handlebars!!;)

Have bought three bikes for myself in the last 2 years, 1 road bike for my other half, she bought the mtb herself, 1 jump bike for my boy and two 20ins wheeled bikes for my grandaughters and 1 scoot along bike for the third grandaugher, my mum did not want one, mind you she is in her 80s, think that's enough for the time being ^_^

As a late starter ( to having NEW bikes), i average one about every three years.
Hrmphh, never had a new bike as a kid in the late 60s, early 70s. Always had 2nd hand, even up till in my 40s.
Since aged 42, ive had new...
Raleigh Chimera
Trek 7100FX (a regretable purchace although i still have it, i did go out for a roadbike but didnt have the funds. A compromise purchace...dont do it)
Bianchi Via Nirone
Another Bianchi Via Nirone
Ribble Sportive Racing.

Personally, i dont get the desire for the best groupsets...my best is Veloce. Its functional, reasonably good looking, and for me, anything better is just more expense when it comes to replacing bits. I could easily afford better, just don't desire it.
Horses for courses though, if you do desire it..good for you.

After 3 years, i start to get the urge for something new, plus odd scrtaches and scrapes are showing on the frame, bits are starting to get tired....
