Just call me Chris...
I've had a lot of books from here, thanks muchly all ;)

I always pass them on though, I must admit it's frustrating to take the time (and pay the postage) only for someone to just pocket them.

In the beginning a few forummers had books which they wished to pass on. To keep it simple they posted in Cafe and the first person to reply got the book on the understanding they'd pass it on.
<The book of Genesis>

then someone had an idea..

...and it all went to rat shoot with raffles and nobody cared or had any loyalty.

Thanks Noodley - I really had no idea, but you're biblical allusions make a lot of sense ;)

I agree a raffle is a bag of pooh for everyone - not least myself.

I think I'll just give my book to the 1st offerer and they can do what they please with it.

Anyway I took Noodle's advice and eschewed any shenanigans like raffles.

Tynan replied straight away so I just sent it to him. I'm sure it's gone to a good home

Did you put the wrong address on it then?;)

My tuppence worth.

I thought the original premise of first come first served worked and thought the raffles worked too.

What doesn't work for me is people counting how long you've had the book. I trust people will pass them on when they're done and hope people trust me to do the same. This will fall down occasionally but works most of the time.

It does make sense under the tidyforum act for them to be offered in "Free/Exchange" in the classifieds. I preferred them in the cafe but can find them in both places.

Once I've sent a book to someone, what they do with it is up to them. Same once they've sent one to me. I'll put them all back in circulation eventually, but I'm not panicing over exactly when.

Oh golly longers - I still haven't finished reading that book you lent me ages ago!

Let me lend you one of mine. Er, do you fancy reading John Peel's autobiography (finished by his family after his untimely death)? I was enjoying it but got distracted after the first 50 pages or so and haven't got round to finishing it. If you'd like me to post it to you, PM your address to me again. Alternatively, I could bring it along to the Mini-North-West-Passage if you are planning to do it again this year.

If you don't fancy the Peel book, I'll send you a list of other candidates.

I kind of disagree in that this is a cycle forum and the donor is picking up the tab for postage and it's therefore beholden on the reciever to offer the same generosity albeit in his own time.

I also don't see the problem with a raffle. In fact it ought to be fairer, because 'first come first served' gives a better chance to people online more. Time was, I could only be online during the day when I was at a Uni computer, now I'm mostly only online in the evenings and weekends. Giving people a day to respond and picking one out of them gives the day time and evening people a chance.

If people don't pass a book on, then that's not ideal, but if you give something away that's that as far as I'm concerned. Good karma works for those who follow the code. I don't think there ought to be a time limit either - stuff happens and gets in the way of reading. Anyway, you can't appreciate a book if you have to rush it.
