Time was, I could only be online during the day when I was at a Uni computer, now I'm mostly only online in the evenings and weekends. Giving people a day to respond and picking one out of them gives the day time and evening people a chance.
If people don't pass a book on, then that's not ideal, but if you give something away that's that as far as I'm concerned. Good karma works for those who follow the code. I don't think there ought to be a time limit either - stuff happens and gets in the way of reading. Anyway, you can't appreciate a book if you have to rush it.
I also see the raffle as the fairest solution, even though I started one yesterday and then gave the book to the 1st applicant
(Probably the worst solution of all

I think it was purely the hassle. It's selfishness on my part I accept, but organising a raffle, choosing the winner fairly etc, seems harsh if it falls on the person who is giving away a free book anyway.
I think maybe the 1st come/1st served type post is more simple and more likely to lead to more book exchanges than if you have to organise a raffle. (Although I accept your point that most of us only log in at certain times so it's not a fair means of distribution.)
I don't have an answer but still think it's great to be a part of a bunch of people who are prepared to send free books to people they've never met.
I certainly don't care how long Tynan has the book - I've given it to him as far as I'm concerned to do with as he will.
