I also pick up discarded inner tubes and mend them if they haven't a previous repair.

Talking of old inner tubes, they fantastic for using as shimmys or to protect the surface when clamping two items together.
I do this too.
@Reynard I just made about a pint of chopped garlic oil with 36p of reduced fresh garlic, some vegetable oil.
Great for adding to pasta sauce, making hummous, basting meat.
Ok, you can buy a similar jar for around a pound, so no massive savings, but I had fun doing it, got the peels for the compost bin, don't have a redundant glass jar because I reused one. Plus I believe my chopped garlic is tastier than shop bought ^_^

@Pat "5mph" - ooh, lovely. :okay: I make my own preserved garlic with herbs (bay, rosemary, thyme, oregano) in oil - picked up a kilo net of garlic on Bethnal Green market last year for £2. Still have one jar left. Lots of lovely garlic to put in allsorts, then like you, I also have the oil to use for stuff too.

Agreed, it's much tastier than shop bought. And cheaper - the whole cloves in oil are really pricey.

Where do the innertubes come in to the above?

I think unless someone is on a budget like low waged people, students, unemployed etc then its not very nice to be a real penny pincher especially when being a miser affects others.People do remember if you wont buy them a drink back or pay your share of the bill etc.I wouldnt have anything to do with a miser because they never get any better and it shows a wider meaness of spirit.Like if you wont buy them a bun then its obvious that you wouldnt help them if they had a real difficulty.
There's a difference in being "mean with money" and being "mean with spirit". You can't seperate the two, there's where problems start.

I'm well known in my family for wearing/using stuff till it falls apart, then if it's repairable patching it to get a few more years out of it.

Mmmm, there's a world of difference between being a miser and actively looking to maximise one's spending power.
Indeed!
I'm not "tight" by any means, but I'm gonna be soon, because I bought some cycling clothes for my summer tour on sale, they were really cheap but my size was out of stock, so I got a smaller size
Blame the found a bargain thread on CC :stop:

I am not tight as such, I will gladly get the first round and a few more besides. I will get the cakes or bacon butties in on a group ride, and am more than happy to see someone using something I no longer need without beer tokens changing owner. However, I am careful and will always repair rather than replace where possible. One little trick I have homed in on in recent years is to wrap my sandwiches for work in the old bread bags and muffin wrappers. I can't see the point of paying 5-10p per food bag while chucking a perfectly good food grade wrapper in the bin!
