Ok this may sound like a simple question but I was wondering how people who intend to leave their bikes whilst out on a ride carry their locks with them?

I have just purchased a new lock for a couple of reasons. The first my old one fell apart the second because when i had it wrapped it around the frame of the bike the rubbing from the general motion of cycling and weight of the oxford lock rubbed the paint clean off. Quite annoying as it was a new bike i had just dropped 1K on.

Anyway back to the question i don't have room on the bike to fit the new bike lock holder as it would mean removing a bottle cage and when out doing 50+ miles i need all the liquid i can carry also as its a cyclocross bike i want to keep the weight to a minimum.

I chuck mine in a topeak bag attached to a rear rack, but thinking about getting a Hiplok for days I want to travel lighter.

Round my hips... HipLok for the win.
You don't really feel the weight and it does not make your bike pig ugly.

It's every bit as good as a D-Lock or U-Lock IMHO as most of these you can pop open with a bottle jack from a car.
The reality is if anyone wants your bike they will have it, but the hiplok looks quite beefy as such it has a visual deterant aspect to it.
I like it as it makes carrying a lock easy and comfortable.

IMHO if you don't want to risk losing your bike, don't leave it anywhere.. That's the best security

i have a D lock at work which i haven't used for so long it's seized up. i haven't used it for so long because (a) we have a secure car park so (b) i use the less robust lock on my bike to lock it coz i can't be arsed with the D lock. the less robust lock is a 1 metre curly thing i got from halfords with a combination lock on it. It would take a saw to get through it, or a hammer or something to smash the combination. it's more to stop opportunistic thieves and i keep it wrapped round my stem in case i want to nip into a shop or something. i don't think i'd leave it all day with that on, but it's fine for when i want to nip off for 10 mins.

I don't bother with the lock if doing a 50 miler. I keep the bike on me, so no need for lock.

For local errands I use a hack bike with a D lock in panniers. For commuting I have another D lock at work.

depending on size/flexibility of the lock whats wrong with a saddle bag?

saddle bag is full with spare inner tube, allen keys and a small spanner etc. would need a back pack to fit lock in aswell.

Guess i will have to keep looking for a trade off between weight and inconvience of carry the lock or not whilst out on a long ride.
