Just use the gears to make it harder. I don't use a spare wheel. What I do is spin the back wheel and screw up the roller till it touches the wheel and then apply one complete turn of the thread. It gives roughly the same traction each time.
Tyres wear on rollers just as the do on the road and I don't worry about it.
If the wheel spins consistently then add another turn on the thread.
