Any ideas how to remove old decals, transfers, etc from an old frame without ruining the paint underneath?

Stickers with a thumbnail, a bit of warmth and some WD40 to remove the glue after.
Transfers usually have a clearcoat to protect them so removing them will leave a transfer shaped hole in the aforementioned clearcoat.
