It's not a dilemma. All he has to do is lie. Convincingly.

Well the good news is the Mrs RR has told some little porkies about the condition of the roads around our area and our visitor has decided she doesn't dare venture too far from the M6, so feeling a bit sorry for her (she's got until 02:15 to kill) we are going over to meet her for supper at the hotel at J31.

I'm with you there COG - don't believe in the old stiff upper lip business - tell it like it is, with a bit of subtlety and bobs your uncle- the keepers stay about, the ones not worth it will sling their hooks. No sleep lost.

Call her and tell her the roads are so bad that you can't even drive over to meet her.

That sorts the current visit issue but, in the longer term ... there has been some good advice earlier. All you have to do is decide which posts were that good advice
