From where you are you could plan a trip to the coast, a fifty there, cup of tea and then you'd have to get home

That's the way I've done it. Barmouth and back for me is 98.5 miles so I rode up and down the promenade until I'd done sufficent for it to be 100 when I got back to Llangollen. I did it as a solo ride so that no one would see me fail and I only told friends after I had done it.

The trick is to take it very easy in the early stages and coast going down hills.

Hooray!!! I'm allowed to reply to this thread after yesterday ;)

Based on that one and only experience, my suggestion would be to make sure that you are far enough from home when you reach 75 miles that you can't give up and will have to get to 100 if you want to get back. Up to 75 it all seemed remarkably easy (then again, our route was reasonably flat)...

Do a 200Km Audax. You'll suddenly find being beaten to it by a bloke in his 60s with a woolly bobble hat and riding a bashed up old fixie with a saddlebag is not something you want to admit to your mates.
