Hi folks

I'm on the market for a decent hybrid bike for speedy commuting. Budget is £800 or near-about. On my list of highly desirable features are hydraulic disc brakes, a compact chainset, flat handle bars and 700c wheels. Also, this is not essential but would be nice to know if the frame can take mudguards and a lightweight rear pannier rack. Can anyone give me any recommendations?

Cheers

I got some interesting replies when I posted a similar question https://www.cyclechat.net/

The Ridgeback Supernova seems popular although no disc brakes

My Sirrus is pretty quick, but no disc brakes in the range

Marin are nice and this will do the trick http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/marin-point-reyes-urban-bike-id61135.html

Cool, thanks for the advice! Having hunted around the web I have decided I quite like the current Boardman range of hybrid bikes. They seem very well specced for the price. Was actually wondering about going for the team CX bike as it can then also serve me as a winter training bike and for riding along dirt tracks. It also looks like it will take mudguards and a rear pannier rack too without compromising the rear disc brake. I'd be interested to hear comments from anyone else who has got one of these bikes.

Sorry it's not answering your question, but may I ask what drew you to the conclusion that hydraulic discs and flat bars are a must?

@Jezston - I have a number of other bikes which are fitted with disc brakes. Albeit for the extra weight, I just love the assertive stopping power they give - especially in wet, greasy weather. I know that conventional brakes when properly set up can be every bit as effective but I am simply smitten with discs. I may however go for mechanical discs over hydraulic onces since they're a bit easier to service myself.

I am not all that bothered about handlebars but I just find that drops are not really necessary for everyday commuting so prefer flats.

A newbie here and slight bike tart,im in the same predicament as the poster,I prefer the flat bars for comfort and im pretty used to them thro the years..ie bull horns, grifter and mountain bikes.
Ill be going thro the cycle to work scheme and was told halfords are not a chosen outlet/partner?
Ive narrowed my choice down to the boardman, Sirrus Comp or another of your recommendations...
cheers in advance..

.

There are a number of different schemes, through a number of different retailers and the schemes have different T&Cs so check all the details with your HR rep - especially regarding the payment at the end of the scheme (if there is one)

I heard about a few things Halfords had been up to but I wont post them here in case they sue the crap out of me LOL

Depending on where you plan to ride have a look at the Crosstrail as well as the Sirrus, Crosstrail is a bit more 'mountain bike' against the Sirrus's 'road bike' (please excuse the crap description) and both range from £400 for the base model to £1500 for the Pro Disc/Limited.

Crosstrail is somewhat heavier than the Sirrus - I have had both - the former is more comfy on rough stuff, the latter quicker on the smoother stuff (including potholed London roads  )
