Hi,

I think it's time to upgrade my bike. I cycle to work most days. It's about 8 miles each way with a few hills. I have a few essentials I want from my new bike.
 1. A 2 x 10 gear set. I want a double chain ring (50-54/34).
 2. Flat handle bars (I spend a lot of time on my brakes/shifters)
 3. Disk brakes
 4. 700 x 25-8mm wheels
I have been considering the Specialized Sirrus Pro Disc 2014 Hybrid Bike (Approx £2000). It's a great spec with high quality components but I'm a bit nervous about having a carbon frame, I have my reservations about the wheels and I think ideally I'd like to have a mud guard so I don't have to spend so much time cleaning the cassette and derailleurs. I haven't seen another bike that matches the Sirrus Pro for quality that comes with a steel frame. Does anyone know of any other bike I might consider at or less than £2000?

Thanks in advance,
Dermot.

Wow a lot of cash for a flat bar commuter  I'm about to sell a 2013 Sirrus Elite disc with rack and guards (on a drive to reduce my bikes!) which you could have for a lot less ^_^

Otherwise this will save you a whole lot of cash but doesn't look like it take guards?

Yes, £2K is a lot to spend. I got to that figure because I dismissed a lot of other bikes because I didn't like their derailleurs or other components. I really want a quality road bike with flat-bars, disk brakes and 700 mm wheels. A Shimano 105 or so gear-set also sweetens the deal. I am very tempted by this Boardman hybrid Pro. The spec looks comparable to the Sirrus but without the carbon frame and I'd save £1000 . My searching has been limited to Evans, Wiggle and CRC. I never heard of Planet X before, not a bad spec though.

For what it's worth my bike is never left outside. It's either in the hallway at home (to the fury of my misses) or in the bike shed at work which is inside the premises.
Thanks for the replies. I have a few other sources to scour now.
Dermot.

Definitely look at the whyte sterling, not sold through the big chains but their website has a dealer search facility

I'm put off, perhaps wrongly, by the SRAM gear-set. The Boardman's hybrid looks like it has higher quality components but I can't say I've done much in the way of real comparisons.

Oops didn't spot that!

Oh well. Disc brakes are overrated anyway, I mean to say of course they're really good but not really needed... I mean if they were essential then how have people managed without them for so long?
Mad budget for a commuter bike by the way, Dermot - lucky guy!
The company I work for will give me an interest free loan, payable over a year, so you don't feel the pinch as much and still cheaper than public transport in London.

Hats off to HLaB. I went into my local store on Saturday and plumbed for the Broadman Hybrid pro 2014. At half the price I was going to pay, I'm very happy. There might be issues with reach. I could be leaning too far forward. I might need some advise on that but thanks anyway.
