I think hub gears are more durable and need less maintenance than derailleurs? You get fewer gears though

I doubt the spec is different on the Pinnacle, just Evans have probably written it up incorrectly - they are the only seller of the bikes (it's their house brand)

Go to Evans with your photo ID and bank card and ride it

Seems a solid review of the bike I was looking at previously. I'm really no good at making decisions

Go ride some bikes, see which feels best and makes you smile and go ooh. Reading reviews just gets rid of the dross, tells you nothing about which bike is right for you

Would be nice to narrow it down to a few before I consider test riding, though. "Hybrid" is such a confusing type of bike.. vast majority of people would agree there's no need for front suspension, yet 75%+ has some low-end Suntour that weighs about 2.25kg on front.

Dawes Discovery 501 hybrid - comes with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.

Entry level suspension (spring loaded) take a very long time to work loose, so unless you're into 1 ft drops, it'll take a good pounding before you start to get the most out of it. Having said that, it does make a difference on rutted/rocky tow paths versus a rigid fork. I ride both and somedays I just prefer the outright comfort rather then getting jolts and thuds going through my elbows and arms.

What lock should I buy? Obviously "gold rated" and something I could attach to the bike would be an advantage

Seen that and it's a little more than the Raleigh I linked to, what makes the Dawes better?

Something different - wherever it's 'better' is down to your usuage and preference. The Raleigh more a road orientated flat bar road bike, the Dawes is closer to a rigid MTB, and is geared that way with a triple crank.

From "up north" and 6ft so sadly not an option.. Something close to what I posted is what i want. They do have 2 similar ones with front suspension but not sure how much a pair of rigid forks would be

In my view, even locked out, suspension forks aren't as good on road as proper rigid ones, they add weight and still some bounce

The Ridgeback has Tektro HDC-300 brakes. Its a bit off-putting that Tektro don't list these in their products here: http://www.tektro.com/_english/01_products/00_prolist.php ..Maybe they're removed because they're an old series? Not sure. Seems 75% of bikes come with Tekro.. I'd prefer Shimano but they don't seem as popular, even at the higher price range

i'd have to look at the Tektro on the Whyte, see what the reviews etc are
