Hi,

Rutland had some small bikes in the other day when we were over there. We brought a bike from them, guy with a grey pony tail in sales was very helpful and spent a lot of time with us.

Not so happy with the after sales set up (or indeed lack of it) so wise to get it double checked if you buy from there.

Also, one of the guys in the clothing department is a bit of a letch when it comes to the ladies.

happy hunting.

Cheers

A-J, look at the Boardman Hybrid pro. It has all you ask, with a compact double chainset and Avid Elixir disc brakes. I commute on mine and am planning some longer distance stuff. £800. Luvverly. (try and work round the Halfords thing, it's only psychological.....!!)

Oh, and it weighs 21lb.

Lovely Bike I would buy a Boardman anyday only thing I will say is my local Halfords are crap to deal with customer service is an absolute joke but the bike is top class.

I have one of this years Borealis 1 from Evans and would recommend it, also tried the Borealis 2 but it was more than i wanted to spend as needed - mudguards, panniers, lights.
Bought it mainly as a commute bike (already have a road and mountain bike) and it flies along with very little effort. Sales and after service from Evans was brill, had my eye on a Genesys before this but LBS would let me test it so wasn't willing to buy.

Hi,

I am in a similar position with a similar budget. My shortish list is;
Boardman Pro Ltd
Trek 7.7
Lapierre Sharper 700
Ridgeback Flight 05
Marin Alp Mill Valley
Specialised Sirrus Expert
Bianchi Alu Carbon
Scott Spedster S20 FB 2010
Ridley Tempo
Cannondale Synapse Flat Bar 105

A couple of these might be of my list now, but its not far off. Any advice would be good - I do 40miles a day commuting, need to carry a pannier, 99% flat but one very steep hill at the end makes me think I need three front cogs (any advice?).

Good luck. If you are like me you'll be thinking about this in a very confused state for some time!

Regards
K

I was in this position earlier this year when I had to choose a cylce2work bike. Decided on a Charge Mixer and it's great. The 2010 model has brazings for mudguards, rack and two bottle cages which the 2009 model lacked.

My main requirement was a Shimano Alfine hub.

Another vote for the Boardman Pro.

Although the new Ltd Edition looks luuuverly!!

I agree - I'm looking at a new Hybrid for the summer - had my mind fixed on a Cannondale Badboy 700, but now the Boardmans are starting to look attractive.

If only Halfords would employ knowledgable / competant bike mechanics/staff in "all" their shops.

Thanks for all the replies. I know people get sick of the 'which bike' question, so i appreciate your help - it really is invaluable.

Still searching (you are so right, sayek1, this is going to be a long and slightly obsessive search...)

Boardman Pro added to list.

Trying to find somewhere to try out Norcos but looks like i'll have to travel - no suppliers near Birmingham.

Not quite a Hybrid, but close - I saw you asked about disc brakes on another thread. Have a look at the "Kona - Dew Drop" on Wiggle, their on offer just now and they have Avid discs and get good reviews. It's on my radar at the moment too.

All the best!

p.s. remember to post an update when you decide what your getting.thanks.

As a bad boy 700 owner I would have to say if I was buying a hybrid out of the 2010 bikes it would either be the charge Mixer, Lappier shaper I think its called (saw this is the cycle show it looks awesome) or the new bad boy 700.

probably go for the bad boy again as it looks and rides very well, but that would probably be my list.

I just cant deal with Halfords anymore they are the pits, and ive tried everyone in my local and not so local area and they are all the same. I just dont think I would buy a bike from them !?.

Sorry - a little bit late in here. Where abouts in Birmingham are you?

Under the guidance of User here (much more of a cyclist than me), I recently did a similar trip round the bike shops of Birmingham, followed by extensive procrastination, before eventually making the decision on my new steed.

OK, I went for a Road bike rather than a hybrid (have a need-for-speed problem), but can give some feedback on bike shops that I visited, and how they were.
