I almost cycled

I didn't pay attention to the weather reports last night, and I assumed that in Torrance/Glasgow the weather would be cold and dry this morning again, as it was at the weekend. So this morning I got all my cycling gear on and was ready to cycle in.

Luckily as I had noticed that it had started snowing lightly, I made the last minute decision to go with my wife in the car. It made things more awkward (childcare wise), but I gruggingly decided that the roads might be a little tricky......

:eek: A little tricky! Blimey! The snow has started with vengeance. It is very thick heavy snow here in Glasgow, and even the main roads are getting clogged up.

Oh dear. even having the car, I am starting to get concerened about the journey home! :surrender:

Autosocks.

My Brother used his on a 25% gradient to rescue an SUV at the bottom of a hill in Brighton at the weekend. He only has FWD too.

I dont have to worry about snow or ice today. I'm off sick. I hate being off sick.

Umm err! No chance. It is crazy up here in Glasgow at the moment, the snow has been very heavy since 8am and is still falling. It's also falling on snow and ice!

Aparently there have been multiple crashes etc on the roads around here, and our kids school has just closed (our childminder should collect them.....hopefully).

Oh and the phone networks are busy!! It's the end of the worlllllllddddd......

I set off in about a foot of snow on my CX-tyred MTB. There weren't many vehicles on the road in Stirling this morning so it was a fairly easy journey in. I'll be sticking full-on MTB tyres on tonight though I think, the CX tyres are ok in a couple of inches of snow but it was pretty funny at times trying to go in a straight line this morning as both tyres struggled for grip!

That's it. I need to get my daughter as the nursery is closing. Mmm. I wonder what the roads will be like!

Wish me luck!

I pedalled in for my night shift lasdt night thought I had made a mistake as the freezing fog rolled in during the night. Roads were fairly ok though I took a slightly different route to usual to avoid some potentially icy bits.

Determined to ride in when I can but not risking ice if I can avoid it.

One of our guys rolled his ford focus in last winters ice spell on the same road i use.Theres a 20 ft drop with no barrier next to one bit of the road.

Cycled through the snow over the past few days in Sheffield, which has been deep. (Over my knees on the drive). T'was -6 degrees on the way home in the early hours, and all was well on my hybrid.

Just took it really steadily, particularly in the corners.

Fate aspired against me to make sure I won't be cycling tomorrow after multiple emails from the uni assuring the exams are on, tomorrows is now cancelled; perhaps when all buses were cancelled they decided to call them off; it'll be hard rescheduling it though :-(

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I made it today and boy i wish i hadn't, turned out it was - 10 for the commute in and about the same for the return trip with freezing fog
Last mile is along a cyclepath on the way in that had not melted at all, it had just turned to ice with ruts in that i had to creep along. The return journey starts on the path so i got cold before i could really get going.

Got home and although i was cold i thought i felt fine until i had a shower that made my feet hurt as soon as the water touched them and started to shiver when i got out .

Sod this until its a bit warmer !!

Aye I made it home (by car by the way Gaz, definitely not on the bike!). The roads were chaos in Glasgow today. For most of the way home I was drving on slush that was on top of ice. Lots of wheelspin starts!:smile:

I really enjoyed the drive home though, as people had abandoned their cars and were walking. There were people everywhere, and they were all chatting and helping each other out. It takes extreme (ish) conditions to get a bit of community spirit back. Just a shame it vanishes as quickly as the snow can melt...
