well I can actually

More motorists are driving and using a mobile

Figures released by the Department for Transport this week show that for the second year running mobile phone use amongst drivers has increased substantially. The figure includes both hand-held mobile phones, which can attract up to 3 penalty points, and hands-free sets, which are legal but not recommended by the DfT. CTC is especially concerned that usage is particularly high amongst lorry and van drivers: 2.6% were observed on hand-held phones while driving, with another 2.4% using them hands-free. Operating a lorry is a dangerous enough activity without the added distraction of using a mobile phone, which one in twenty drivers appears to be doing.

Given that the chance of being stopped using one is so low I am not at all suprised.

I hope they start using the road camera system to nab phone drivers soon. This reminds me, I spotted a driver of a company van on the phone yesterday in homebase. Must download the picture and report him to his company.

I'd be more worried that he was driving inside homebase than the mobile phone ;)

Is this really a problem? The reason the use of hand held mobile phones is ban for drivers is because people have been killed. No one has every been killed by a cyclist using a mobile phone, the real problem is that people don't take driving seriously.

Yes it is a problem when someone is not in total control of their mode of transport, putting themselves and others at risk as there not concentrating on what there doing. Regardless of weather it's a car driver or cyclist the rule on this should be the same.

I think without offering you an apple and oranges Nobel you will find the regulation in question applies to motor vehicles, not cycles.

I know this regulation does not apply to cyclists, It's just my personal feeling on the matter, and I'm fine with you disagreeing with me on this, however I don't use my phone when in the car or when on my bike. Having seen quite a few local scrotes and the odd uni student texting/ talking while riding and clearly not in control (a fair bit of weaving going on). I just feel that if your going to ride on the road do so in full control so you can take quick action if you need to, you cant do that with a phone in your hand.

A motor vehicle has a lot more kinetic energy than I do. With respect to mobiles, I'd really rather they didn't when cycling, or certainly in some of the situations you do see it. There's always going to be some risk with cycling, after all cyclists kill a small number of people a every year. One sees the same behaviours with mobiles from pedestrians up - some people can just about control it but you see pedestrians spatially disorientated, slow to react and bumping in to things. One sees identical behaviours in vehicles with respect to mobiles.

A lot of the time I see cycling + mobile is actually in places like parks and cycle tracks and stuff and not actually roads. If I did see it as a problem I wouldn't see it as cost effective for the police to pursue.

Yeah those thoughts reminds me of Gaz's videos, I think it is. This time of year we have an increase in this kind of nonsense as the weather improves .

I think mobile use is on the rise sadly. You get people on here like Vikeonabike that says he's given out quite a few mobile tickets but there's just so much of it out there. What really winds me up is there is stupid use and stupid use, from time to time you see someone on a mobile for five or ten minutes or later see the same person driving back in the other direction still on the phone/making a new call.

Mobile use is on the up, and there is far to much for the police to deal with, what gets my goat is that it (mobile use while driving) is as socially bad as drink driving, hovever people still do it, and see nothing wrong with it. The increase in smart phones i think has made this worse, as your potentially always connected to facebook, twitter ect some people are afraid to let it go for an hour.

Ah, but the difference between mobile and drink driving is that in the event of an accident you need witnesses to corroborate mobile use, against a machine to confirm drinking and driving.....

I think there's been a few cases where the Police have contacted the operator to determine that the driver was on the phone, I'm not sure how that works with handsfree though
