I don't like Mondays.

It's Monday, so I leave the house earlier than usual, pump up my tyres, and put some oil on the chain.

I leave the house, and think:
"I love cycling on Mondays. Your chain is greased, tyres pumped up, and you've had the weekend resting, so legs are feeling particularly strong and lively. I'm full of beans, and really flying."

Then half a mile down the road, the penny drops:
"I hate Mondays. Because its Monday, you haven't yet woken up properly, as yesterday you were still asleep at this time. Because its Monday, you haven't got into the morning routine yet, and because you have just pumped up the tyres, and greased the chain, the routine is different from the usual one anyway. And as a result, you have left your rucksack with your work clothes and nibbles in the garage, and got 1/2 mile down the road without realising it!"

I replaced my (very worn) chain last night, but didn't bother changing the cassette because I didn't have one to hand. I like to use the optimistic form of mechanics, which generally just means leaving things alone, and assuming they'll be okay.

This morning, as I started out, the chain started slipping. Assuming it wouldn't be too bad I kept going until I was about 2 miles from home, and at the bottom of a nasty hill. At the point I decided that the chain slip really was too bad, and I'd rather turn round now and ride a different bike than struggle all the way to work, and more importantly, all the way uphill on the way home this evening in the dark.

So, 2 miles back home, up that nasty hill, then on the MTB bike and back the way I'd just been. I've just ordered a couple of spare cassettes in the hope that I can be bothered to do a proper job next time!

Mind you, it was quite a pleasant extension to my commute really, and I generally have more fun riding the MTB anyway. May go the muddy way home tonight...

Glad I'm not the only one that forgets important stuff because of a minor change in post-sleep routine. The amount of times I've had to cycle back 5 miles to fetch the keys hanging out of the back door...
Got a mile up the road then realised I'd left my wallet and phone at home. Couldn't be bothered heading back so bored a tenner of a mate at work.
What on earth did you do to get a tenner out of them?!

Sorry Jim - I just had to laugh! But be grateful that you didn't get almost to work before realising your back seemed awfully light - and had to cycle back up two sodding big hills to fetch your rucksack. Don't ask me how I know this...

I know what you mean about the routine being less than fully established on a Monday though !

I did that once, getting almost to work before realising I'd left my change of work clothes at home. What should have been a 27km commute turned into a 74km one .
