Is thst the Hope one? Lovely isn't it. Apparently they knocked 2 grand off the original price and gave everyone who paid it a refund on the difference. I bet Trek wouldn't do that!

Me too, I much prefer them over down tube shifters. However, they ain't cheap to replace in the event of damage. But, hey, nothing's perfect!!

The left one on my Eastway is knackered, I'm looking at E Bay for a replacement, though I'm in no rush to replace.

My brother has his Mercian which he’s had for 30+ years. He’s put index shifting on that. Nowt to stop you.

And bugger the expense, treat yourself, get a new one too!

Well if you want to treat yourself, and if its been 30 years since you bought a new one, you're surely due a new one right?. Sounds to me like the N+1 could be a custom steel frame with a modern group set......or a good second hand steel frame you can add a modern group to.

Of course your current bikes will be fine for their purpose too. The thread title should be rephrased, you don't need a new bike, but you want one, go on, you're worth it.

Yes, I've seen that. Other attractive options are from Surly, Spa, or one of a handful of custom steel frame makers - and that's very likely the way I'd be going if I were buying my first good bike as a relative youngster today.

But for any of those bikes, I'd be paying a lot of money for something probably not significantly better than what I have, at least in terms of the things that matter to me.

Oh, and this "group set" business... nooooo!

With the technology I use, I can mix any brake levers, shifters, derailleurs, freewheels, chainsets, from a very wide range of makers and models - why would I give up that cheap flexibility in exchange for having to buy the whole lot as a single set at huge cost with almost no compatibility with anything else?

The more I look at modern bikes, the more I see a triumph of marketing over sense.

That's another really nice bike, but I wouldn't consider a bike now without disc brakes.

Don't knock integrated shifters, I really like mine, despite also finding the aesthetics of my ancient steel steeds with their downtube shifters.

In all seriousness, nowt wrong with an older bike if that's what you want.
I'd love a penny-farthing myself. Not sure it'd be entirely practical for commuting. Or touring.

That's another really nice bike, but I wouldn't consider a bike now without disc brakes.

I've not yet had a bike with disc brakes but I've been impressed with the ones I've seen.
