Is thst the Hope one? Lovely isn't it. Apparently they knocked 2 grand off the original price and gave everyone who paid it a refund on the difference. I bet Trek wouldn't do that!
Me too, I much prefer them over down tube shifters. However, they ain't cheap to replace in the event of damage. But, hey, nothing's perfect!!
. Sounds to me like the N+1 could be a custom steel frame with a modern group set......or a good second hand steel frame you can add a modern group to. 
Yes, I've seen that. Other attractive options are from Surly, Spa, or one of a handful of custom steel frame makers - and that's very likely the way I'd be going if I were buying my first good bike as a relative youngster today.@Alan O take a look at the Genesis cdf

That's another really nice bike, but I wouldn't consider a bike now without disc brakes.
