Well you got the reaction you wanted with the blowing kisses and smile wave thing, but this time it happened to be a short tempered nutter who acted instead of just getting a high heart rate.I would take this as a good learning curve and stop trying to wind the driver up,even if he is an idiot, next time you might get an even worse reaction.

Yeah, I'm working my way downwards though the techniques...
Any sort of interaction/reaction seems provocative in these situations, which is why I liked the helmet cam, that is passive and yet very satisfying to have it all on film afterwards.

I stopped getting angry and shouting abuse which just makes you feel worse and down at their level.

My Airzound could really escalate things too at times if I beeped someone who cut me up. Had a couple of people get really angry at being beeped at by a bike.

The smile wave feels much better and usually gives you a laugh and leaves you smiling, but it does deflect their attack back on them, which can easily escalate an already angry situation.

I could have turned around and gone the opposite way, but then you have them giving chase and it wasn't a busy enough road to lose them in traffic.

Stopping and keeping them at a safe distance which I did at the end seems to let them calm down so they can drive away. They also can't sideswipe so easily if you aren't moving and if they give chase on foot, you can just ride off.

It is indeed a learning curve.

Scary thought, what would he have done had he knocked you off, or if you'd stopped?

Would he have been happy with just one punch, or would he have started kicking, would he have stopped?
Would he of driven his car over you as you lay there on the street?

Don't let him get away with such violent acts. If the police ID him and criminal charges arent pressed, demand his details so you can press civil charges.

Yeah, that did go through my mind afterwards. He was pretty intent on stopping me. I have the feeling that if I had aimed for him he would have stood his ground. He had physically blocked both lanes of a fairly busy road using his car and himself. Speed was the only thing I could use to barge past through the gap and luckily the punch landed on my shoulder rather than my head.

If I had gone down it could have been very nasty and people would have stood by and watched it happen.

When I did stop I made sure I was far enough away to keep an eye on him. But yeah that fraction of a second when I charged for the gap and he landed the punch could have gone worse in so many ways.

Sounds terrible, and glad you’re ok – I like to think I’d have just stopped before passing him and carried on waving and blowing kisses – just to see what he did – which road was it btw?

What did he look like?

White, mid 40s, stockyish bloke, short dark hair.
Don't have a clear image as I was focused on the gap.

He seemed very eager to leave his vehicle and get into some kind of fight too which was quite a bad sign. Looked like he could do some damage if allowed.
I feel quite lucky to have gotten around him with just the shoulder hitting his fist.

It was here: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=51.450047,-0.481773&spn=0.001073,0.002929&t=h&z=19

Heading North on Town Lane, he did the road block thing at the little right hand bend next to the car park.

I would agree, hanging back would have been a more sensible option. I'm sure he would have just gotten back in his car as the traffic backed up. Charging past him could have gone wrong in so many ways....

Itsjust this sort of thing that happens when we wind up with waves and especailly kisses,iv never done it and dont intend to,its not worth coming across this type and like you say, what could have happened.Get your cam on and film his manouver and give it to the police, this is the sort of incident that cams are good for.And knowing the way you are effecting people by the wind up moves is surely enough to tell you not to do it,as the idiot driver in thier fit of anger could hurt someone else too,and if you carry on and escalate the situation, you only have yourself to blame,as it could have been avoided. But then again,if you like purposely winding drivers up,and dont mind the possible consiquences to your self or some other innocent, then carry on.At the end of the day,its all about safety on the road,if a car does a stupid thing, which they do seem to,then do whatever is needed to get yourself to safety, but to make matters worse by purposely winding the idiot up is just asking for more trouble.Iv known mates who did this sort of thing whenever they had an idiot cut them up,and they always seemed to be stressed, and even were threatened,to the extent that they changed thier appearance (shaved beards ect)so they werent easily recognised. Its not worth it.Record it and report it,but dont think retaliateing with wind up techniques is the way to go,unless of course you like trouble;)

Very good advice.
It's so easy to do something on the spur of the moment that you can quickly regret. I was buzzing from the fast sprint at the time and so in a genuinely very happy mood which is why I was a little too playful with the loon who unlike me had probably been stuck in a queue in his box.

All forms of response seem to work against you and like you say the only thing I have found that works is the camera. Totally passive but infinitely more satisfying and effective.

Just ignoring any attempt to engage me in any type of conversation works for me. Unlikely ever to be fruitful and allows me to concentrate on my cycling and getting my journey completed in less time.

I almost always give a quick wave, i.e. stick a hand out rather than actually waving, to all motorists who give way to me (even if I have right of way) If they're pulling out of a side road and then happen to follow me, they tend to give me more room when they pass.

I also do it if I'm riding in primary... just a quick 'wave' to the car behind which they can interpret as either 'sorry for holding you up' or 'thank you for being patient'. Almost always, they tend to hang back and give more room when they do eventually overtake.

I generally find that if you're polite to people, the courtesy is returned.

best to avoid any hand jestures and if it looks tricky - just turn off onto a bitof road a car can not follow.

glad you are ok though - I have had the same thing i cars though - over take someone he does not like it from them to over take you then give yuo the old brake test...

What a complete cock. You were keeping up with the traffic doing 30, and this shrunken-dicked donkey shagger just HAS to be past to prove his superiority. Then when it is challenged, the only way he can express himself is through violence. I bet he's just as frustrated in bed, and lives with a woman that looks like Russel Grant.
