You should never give a dog a cooked bone, they can splinter and choke the dog.

Correct.

The commercially available bones are steam pressure cooked, which helps maintain the water and mineral integrity of the bones.

Look someone says on the internet I know someone whose dog choked on a splinter. It don't doesn't make it true and even if it was how often did it happen.
Your simply taking safety to far.

As for this crap, the bones I get from the pet shop always splinter. Dogs are not it the habit of swallowing splinters. The ultra large bone I gave the dog is beyond a pups ability to splinter. Also I take it of her once she has all the meat of it and put in a stock pot to get the jelly like substance out of it. So does not get the chance to splinter.

well I know we can be a bit too fastidious these days (eg 2nd hand shorts thread) but do you really boil bones for stock AFTER the dog's chewed all the meat off it?

Yes. But most of the time the dog gets it over her biscuits. But it also makes a good base for stew. Remember it is being boiled for long time on a woodburner.

I must admit to being slightly horrified. And anyway, I'd give the bone to the dog after I'd boiled it up for stew, rather than before.

Do you "do the washing up" by letting the dog lick the plates then put them back in the cupboard.

Must admit I'm a bit skeptical of the bone splinters thing too. Our cat eats entire birds and rodents (admittedly raw) and dogs in the wild chew up carcases quite happily

Before and after. Particularly ribs which become very soft.

She gets to lick the plate after I have. So they are very clean when I put them in the cupboard!

My dogs mother simply crushes rabbits skulls and ribs before swallowing in a couple of gulps. His other dogs a staffy crushes it and swallows it in one.

PS when you roast the bones you pour out the fat and (there is lots) sieve it and you have beef dripping. I need to get a metal funnel as its sticks to the plastic ones.
The bones burn very well, if you don't need them all for the dog. She has just eat 3 from the stock pot. I don't think she needs that much calcium.

To much fat so need to roast them before hand.

i'm less worried by roast or boil first - it's letting the dog chew them first is the worrying bit. Presumably the dog has dragged them round the garden and they've gone a bit "gamey" by the time they reach the stock-pot..... or are you teasing us / discouraging dinner guests
