I have noticed the "summer crew" disappearing one by one on my commute...anyone else noticed ?

Do you also notice that they try and park as near as they can to the front door!!!

My cycle route is pretty much deserted all year due to the times I commute (04:45-05:15) But I have noticed that the flash looking BTW scheme bikes have gone from the cycle park.
I have toyed with the idea of giving myself December off, is that soft?

I don't commute everyday on my bike because of the nature of my job, but i do it more at this time of year, i look at it as a great way to keep my mileage up in the winter months when evening training rides out in the countryside are pretty much out. Saying that i never see many people commuting on my route even in the summer so couldn't say if many have fallen by the wayside recently.

You might see me, I am from Wilmslow as well, I cycle from near the Kings arms to Knutsford most days, I am on a Cannondale Hybrid.

I prefer the winter some ways, when its cold and crisp it is stunning, preferable to a summers day to my mind, have only done 2 days this week for various reasons but I keep going through the winter, I like the darkness as well, feel kind of exposed in Spring when the light comes back !

On a rather negative note, the most hardcore group of riders where I work are all off the road due to theft or injury. I also had two cyclists in the same bay of the ward as me when I was in hospital.

While I was in St Thomas' several people - nurses, doctors, consultants, paramedics - said they were dealing with a sudden spike of cyclist injuries. We're not all wimping out.

Every autumn the same reduction in proportion of people riding the winter months. I have to say that those riding has definately increased since 2003 (my restart in the cycle commute) even in the winter. Winter 2003 I was the only one. Last winter got caught up in a cycle jam at a set of lights in Guildford town centre.

People simply wish to experience the most pleasant option. In summer, the bus / train is hot and cramped, the car expensive and the roads congested, whereas the bike is cool and pleasant - plus you can enjoy the scenery. In the winter, the bus / train is merely cramped, and the car at least warm; the bike is hard work as it's dark, cold, and wet, and the buses / taxi drivers love to soak you in the rain.

I intend to continue cycling throughout winter on the Brompton, but some days I know I will not be bothered to, and those days I shall drive. Cycling ain't some macho sport.

I haven't got a car but after this trip to Thailand im thinking of adding the option of a moped.

Bunch of fair weather pussy cyclists as a seasoned campaigner you get used to being wet on a bike summer or winter it makes no difference wet is wet .Have noticed that it's a lot quieter on the way in to work but you still get the odd one that you see now and again ,then again i'm not paying attention to other cyclists concentrating more on the road in front of me ..

I always stop cycling mid December for a number of reasons

There are too many pissed nutters on the roads by the Friday the 11th of December.

On the last Friday before Xmas in 2008 and 2007 I was involved in 'incidents', one of which I was knocked off

There are too many Xmas celebrations that I get invited to

and finally you get cold and wet

I'll start cycling again as soon as the train makes me arrive an hour late for the 3rd time that week. So probably end February !
