I very nearly hit one yesterday on my way to work.
Vehicle turning right in front of me, just past a bus which had stopped... so I went round the bus and through the gap between the right turning vehicle and the front of the bus. No problems there.
It was clearly too small for any car to fit through and a car turning onto the main road (from a street on my left) presumably thought so too... so neglected to check back 'my' way until the last second as he dashed forward. Cue much shouting of "Whoa!!!" from me whereby he managed to jam the anchors on whilst I braked and swerved around the front of his car.
Very close as the braking distance in the wet was much more than usual, plus I didn't want to skid/slide.
Annoyingly though there was no apology from the driver - I assume he just blamed me for being on the road he wanted to join, and being able to get through the gap left by the right turning vehicle.

!
At least your driver was a reasonable chap by the sound of it - probably helped by your 'holding your hands up' gesture to indicate you acknowledged your erro and weren't just going to scoot off into the distance.
