I know that some cyclists don't understand traffic lights....

...but when it's been flashing amber for 10 seconds and no one is crossing you are allowed to go!

Me: Wakey wakey
Driver: Stick head out window "It's not green"
Me: Groans.

If you don't know something as basic as that then

I didn't think that was the case, but looking it up I see that you may 'proceed with caution'. I do often go when it's still flashing amber, but I feel guilty every time.

I think you ought to be glad someone remotely cares about the meaning of the light, and stop being a smart arse. It's impatience that we often rant about, show a little sometime.

A Dizzy M.A.B.I.L
I am always amazed by people can interperate things so differently, we all had driving lessons once upon a time, I sort of presume we all read the highway code - I did. For those that have been driving less than 15 years they would have all had to take the theory test.
I prsume that most cyclist drive cars too, so none of us should have any excuse for not knwoing what lights, signs sgnals, lanes actulay mean
I passed my test as a teenager in an automatic, (as I had a cage on my left leg I couldn't use a clutch) 13 years later I needed to be able to drive a manual, so I booked a course of lessons, I was shocked at how mnay basic rules I had forgot, how many bad habits I had picked up. It took me 3yrs to pass my test - OK I had 2 pregnancies in the middle, so did stop trying for a while!
I didn't pass my test first time either, that took me a 3 attempts, one of which was because my instructor turned up in a new car that I had never driven & had a very stiff clutch that I couldn't get the hang of in the hour prior to the test.
But, I passed eventualy, it has made me a better driver - I really do think that having some sort of 'refresher' course should be mandotory
Ok now i've said that, i'll duck & take cover as that has probably opened up a whole new can of worms

If you're going to care about something at least care correctly - it is these misconceptions which cause problems on the roads (cyclists must use cycle lanes, etc). I don't mind being patient, but I just assumed they weren't paying any attention and I didn't want to sit behind them for ages until they realised.

I wasn't rude about it, and tbh it was pretty much under my breath.

You dont have to wait 10 seconds if flashing amber. You can go right away if the crossing is clear of pedestrians and it starts flashing.

Under your breath enough that the chap sitting in his car heard it?

I prefer them to sit and wait than push through but I'll eat my hat and yours if it was flashing amber for anything close to 10 seconds.

I've got 7 seconds on my stop watch....and it was pretty much under my breath. Her window was open. I had whistled before hand in the same way that I would use a bell.... There's a video if you really want to check.

and some cyclists wonder why car drivers hate them.

Imagine if it was the other way round.. people would be jumping up and down shouting impatient driver etc

Locally there seem to be very few pedestrian crossings left that go to a flashing amber now, most have a traffic light sequence, red-amber-green since they have been changed to LED lights.
I think the waiting for green is just so ingrained in vehicle drivers now that when they do come across a flashing amber they feel uncomfortable about going on it.

Not sure why. If it's clear and the amber is flashing they should proceed. Nothing impatient about that. It's what anyone should do.
